Summary: Sometimes, everything is just too overwhelming for Dawn to deal with by herself.
Muffled voices carried up the stairs, just loud enough that Dawn could make out about half of what was being said, just quiet enough that she missed the rest. Sure, she could probably tiptoe out of her room and take a perch at the top of the stairs to hear more, but Buffy would know she was eavesdropping.
The downsides of having a Slayer as a sister.
A fake sister.
Dawn felt her eyes building up with tears, and she blinked rapidly, attempting to clear her eyes before she started crying. She was getting better with the whole ‘ball of energy stuffed into human form’ thing, but some days, it as still too overwhelming. How could it not, knowing you weren’t a real human until the last year?
A mrow broke her out of her thoughts as Squid jumped onto the bed towards her, pausing when she ran into Dawn’s blanket covered foot. Altering her trajectory, Squid slowly walked the length of Dawn’s body before sitting down next to her head, immediately cleaning her front paw. Watching the cat groom herself, Dawn felt herself relaxing as Squid finished and gently laid down, tucking her paws under her body, her head looking in Dawn’s direction.
Tension almost melted off Dawn as Squid starting purring, and Dawn could not resist pulling an arm out from under the blanket and gently petting the cat. That only increased the volume of the purr, until she could swear everyone in the whole house could hear it.
“I think you saved me,” she whispered, her voice trembling, remembering the terror of being trapped at the top of the tower, the horror at Doc’s sudden appearance before her. “I don’t know what would have happened without you. I probably would have died. And maybe Buffy. And all her friends. I don’t know where you came from, and I don’t know how long you can stay, but I kinda love you.”
Squid’s tail swished as Dawn petted her, the cat’s eyes closing when the girl gently scratched under her chin.
“Dad is supposed to visit next weekend,” Dawn said absently, “The last time I kinda saw him was two years ago; but I didn’t really. I wish I knew how the spell worked, ‘cause dad was never even in Sunnydale since they cast the spell. How does it change so much?”
“I guess that’s why I’m hiding in bed, getting upset about everything, while taking to a cat with tentacles that comes out of its mouth,” she continued, “According to Giles, you don’t exist. And since I’m the Key, I shouldn’t exist as a human. Maybe we’re just a matching pair.”
Seemingly having enough of Dawn’s weepy state, as legitimate as it might be, Squid abruptly stood up, turning her head and watching Dawn’s foot move slightly under the blanket. Her eyes dilated and she crouched, butt wiggling, before jumping and landing on Dawn’s foot, attacking with claws.
Dawn squealed and rolled over, eyes widening comically as she almost fell out of bed. Now glaring at the satisfied looking cat, she reached over to her night stand and grabbed a laser pointer. “You know, I bought this for you, and was saving it. But now I don’t think I want to let you play with it.”
Squid’s head twitched slightly at the laser pointer and, sighing in defeat, Dawn turned it on shined it towards her bedroom wall.
Immediately, the cat leapt for it, and Dawn giggled as she moved it again, and again, and again, until making the mistake of letting it land on the curtain. With a lofty pounce, Squid leapt towards the curtains with outstretched claws, the beginnings of her tentacles engaging from her jaws -
And pulled the whole curtain, rod and all, down with a loud crash, taking out a lamp as it landed.
“Dawn! What are you doing up there?” came Buffy’s loud voice, followed by the tromping of feet on the stairs. For someone who was incredibly stealthy, Buffy sometimes sounded like a herd of elephants stomping up the stairs.
“Oops,” Dawn said, grimacing at the disaster. “Well, I wanted new curtains anyway. Guess this is a good start.”
