Washington, DC
“Who the hell authorized a strike on New York!” the President shouted at his Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The Chairman, General Hammond, spoke up, “It wasn’t one of ours, Sir. All of our nuclear missiles are accounted for. It was the first thing we checked when we heard Dr. Stark’s announcement.”
It didn’t do a lot to calm their Commander in Chief’s rage, but it did a little. “Could it have another country? Do we have any ideas?”
Another Chief, Rear Admiral Rayne, answered that one since he was the nuclear expert, “With the yield of the bomb, it likely would have been fired from a fighter jet, which has a range of one to three thousand miles - probably closer to the former number given the weight of the missiles. Factoring in that they’d want to make it back to their landing site, that doesn’t give a very large radius…comparatively speaking. Unless another country knew about the invasion ahead of time, it seems improbable they’d have a ship close enough. That’s assuming it was a hostile nation, of course.”
“We need to find the sons of bitches who dared to fire on US citizens and make them regret their ill-thought decision,” the President ordered. “Do what you need to.”
Stark Tower, Medbay
Hours later…
Pepper took Tony’s hand and sighed. “I’m sorry I didn’t pick up when you called. My phone was on vibrate and I was too busy watching the invasion on TV to notice. When you wake up, I’m going to have you put in some code to make sure that never happens again. Just so you know, I don’t care if it’s in a voicemail, on a post-it or written on the mirror in toothpaste…having you tell me that you love me will always be something I treasure. I love you, too.”
A throat cleared behind her and she glanced over her shoulder and saw Happy standing there.
“How’s he doing?” the generally stoic man asked, taking a seat where he could watch both of them.
“The doctors said his vitals are stable and the shrapnel in his chest didn’t reach his heart before the reactor was restarted. But they don’t know how long he was without oxygen, so it’s a waiting game until he wakes up before we know if there’s any lasting damage,” she recited, trying to convince herself that it was ‘when’ not ‘if’. “What did you find out?”
Happy’s expression grew dark, and he ground out, “The higher ups notified Rhodey so he could tell us that it wasn’t the military that fired the missile. They’re trying to backtrack the jet to its point of origin, but they didn’t sound optimistic it could be done. Rhodey thinks it will take a miracle despite the small-ish search radius they have to look at. Especially since whoever did it has probably hauled ass away from the region.”
Pepper chuckled despite herself. That sounded like a direct quote from Tony’s best friend rather than Happy’s words. “Give them any help that SI can manage. I want them buried so deep, they’ll be kissing the planet’s core.”
“You got it,” he promised, getting up to make the necessary calls.
Council Headquarters, France
Giles had to reign in his temper to keep the rest of the Council in check. Sometimes he hated being the ‘adult’ of the group. “Was there any indication that would explain a nuclear bomb being unleashed on New York?”
“The portal was closed, all the aliens stopped when that happened and we had stayed for few minutes before teleporting out so they wouldn’t find us with Jennifer,” Buffy replied. “I don’t know what kind of timing is involved in something like that, but it felt like whoever did it, should have known the danger was over and been able to call it off.”
“Should we check with our government allies to see if they know anything?” Xander suggested. “Or if they need our kind of assistance in finding out who did it?”
“You don’t think it was them?” Wes inquired, meaning the US government, rather than their allies.
“It would be career suicide to order a strike like that on any US city, much less one the size of New York,” Oz interjected, shaking his head. “The only way they’d do something like that is if they planned to be thrown in jail afterwards.”
“Then let’s make the offer,” Giles said, looking around for any dissenting expressions and finding none.
