Though she would never admit to being nervous, she was. The fact it took her over an hour to get ready for a simple, casual dinner at a home, not even a restaurant would have clued any of her friends to her nerves. It wasn’t like it was date either. Damian would be there and possibly Batgirl. She was fairly sure that Alfred would be around as well, though she doubted he would sit with them.

And yet, it still took her over an hour to settle on nice jeans, boots, a blouse and a simple up-do Anne would normally wear and no glasses. Hopefully that would be enough to clue Damian in if he wasn’t already.

Then, of course, they were living in the penthouse of Wayne Tower, so, yeah. Money and lots of it. Yes she’d been around wealthy people since Sunnydale sank, but Wayne money was a whole different level.

She scanned the entry to the building, noting the cameras, and security guards. She followed Dick’s directions to the entrance to the residences on the upper floors, showed her ID to the security person and was directed to the appropriate elevator.

When she stepped inside, there were only two buttons, an up arrow and a down arrow. She hesitated a moment, wondering if it was too late to invite them to her apartment where she would at least have field advantage before screwing up her courage and hitting the up button.

She was about to do a breathing exercise to calm down when she spotted the camera in the elevator and decided not to follow through with that idea. She didn’t want Dick to know she was this nervous - or anyone else.

Taking a single deep breath in through her nose, she slowly released it out of her mouth and felt better for it.

Then the doors of the elevator opened.

She only paused a moment before stepping out into the marble and gilt hallway and crossed to the heavy, dark wood doors. Everything projected clean, sleek, modern and expensive.

As she raised her hand to knock, she tuned in to voices, obviously raised voices, coming through the door. She suspected most people would be unable to hear them, but her hearing was better than most. She listened a moment and felt a smile curve her lips and laughter begin to bubble up as she understood the words.

Shaking her head as her small smile became full blown and she fought a chuckle as how like Dawn and Andrew they sounded, she knocked twice and waited.

A moment later, the door opened and a distinguished looking man stood before her. “Miss Summers - Giles?” he asked, eyebrow raised.

“Mr. Pennyworth,” she returned.

“Do come in.”

Buffy took a step inside the apartment and instinctively lifted her hand catching what she learned was called a bat-a-rang.

“Oh, dear,” Alfred said, looking at the bat-a-rang. “Allow me to take that. I’m afraid the children do know better than to bring downstairs work upstairs, but they all seem to forget from time to time.”

“No harm done, Mr. Pennyworth.”

“Very gracious of you,” he assured. “May I take your coat and bag?” He inquired. “And perhaps your stake and the two daggers in your boots?”

Buffy smiled widely and a soft laugh escaped. A look of understanding passed between the two. “The coat, bag and stake, yes. I’m afraid I’ve been a Slayer too long to give up the blades, though. I doubt anything will happen, but…”

“Best be prepared,” he completed, his voice understanding. “If you’ll follow me.”

They hadn’t gotten more than two steps in the entryway when Dick appeared, smile blossoming as he spotted Buffy. He stepped forward and brushed a kiss on her cheek, surprising both of them. “You made it,” he greeted.

“Did you think I wouldn’t?” she asked, an amused smile on her face. “Slayers don’t scare that easily”

Dick shrugged. “I wasn’t sure you’d make it over without ‘work’ interfering. It usually does when things are planned.”

Buffy laughed softly. “That it does, but not tonight.”

“So, do you want to be Buffy Summers or Anne Giles?” he asked, leaning a little closer to be heard over the argument which had meandered to whether one should have marshmallows or whipped cream in their hot chocolate.

“My full name is Buffy Anne Summers-Giles, so they’re both correct, but I mostly go by Buffy.”

“All right,” Dick agreed offering his arm. “Shall we brave the battle?”

“We shall,” Buffy agreed.

The couple walked into the living room and paused. Buffy couldn’t help but laugh. “They sound like siblings,” she informed Dick, not even attempting to soften her voice.

The argument instantly stopped as two horrified faces turned to look at her. “Take that back!” Stephanie and Damian demanded in unison.

Dick and Buffy just laughed. Buffy caught sight of Alfred standing behind them in a reflection on the window, a content and happy smile on his face.

Suddenly, Buffy felt right at home.
