Anariel was in a much more cheerful mood than her welter of half-healed bruises might suggest - at least, to anyone who didn’t know her. Her brothers and sister were well used to her attitude toward such things by now. Although Maeglin occasionally shot a surreptitious glance at them, no one said anything about it. He’d learn.
Tindomiel was reveling in a rare chance to show off to all three of her older siblings.
Anariel had to all appearances worked off her bad temper entirely and was curious about the forest and its plants and creatures, which were a mix of entirely new to her and new to her in this context. The twins knew no more than she did.
Since Tindomiel had been roaming these lands for the past hundred-odd years, she knew a good deal.
At first she kept it vague. But when Anariel demonstrated genuine interest anything her sister cared to point out, particularly if it was edible or medicinal, the youngest child of Elrond gleefully went into a mode that crossed ‘Noldorin scholar’ and ‘Sindarin woodsperson’. If her older brothers found it amusing, they had the sense to keep their mirth to themselves.
Anariel was delighted to hear that all of Tara’s plants had taken in Valinor. Much as she’d enjoyed her dessert surprise her first evening in Aman, Tindomiel didn’t have the heart to hold back that both vanilla and chocolate were all the rage among the Amanyar. She was slightly disappointed to discover that Estë and Yavanna between them had well and truly beaten her to the punch when it came to chocolate. (She found consolation in the twins’ continued ignorance of chocolate, though she couldn’t introduce them to it immediately as she hadn’t thought to bring any.)
“You could just pop home to get some, couldn’t you?” Anariel suggested, watching a nearby honeycreeper in fascination. “You said you know how to use the Key for travelling.”
Tindomiel considered. She hadn’t missed that Anariel was only suggesting travelling her way to get chocolate, not to speed up the trip to Imlanthiriath.
“I could. But if I get caught, everyone’s going to want to know where you are.”
“Not worth it,” Elrohir shrugged.
“We can wait a few more days,” Elladan confirmed. “Besides, Nana may well be planning to showing us chocolate as well.”
“She had months to do that,” Anariel protested.
“We were not much interested in new foods,” Elrohir said mildly. “As someone who is quite particular about her ‘comfort foods’ -”
“Which include chocolate,” Anariel informed them.
“- you should understand others desire for such a thing. Though ours are somewhat different than yours.”
Anariel rolled her eyes.
“Fine, make that no chocolate for the spoilsports. How long will it take us to get home from here?”
“Depends on how slow you want to go,” Tindomiel replied.
“We can go faster,” Anariel said. “I can come back to see the trees and birds. And…what’s that one?”
“Yellow star apple. Make sure it’s fully ripe before you eat it, otherwise it’s got latex in it.”
“Seriously?”
“Yeah.”
“Nifty.”
“We can go faster if we don’t stop tonight,” Elladan suggested. “If Tinu needs to sleep, someone can carry her.”
“Hey!” Tindomiel protested.
“Sorry, you’re still the one who needs the most sleep,” Anariel said, patting her sympathetically. “But we can stop. It’s no big. I don’t mind a few extra days of peace and quiet. Or getting to know the place.”
