Frat party

Buffy was hanging near the drink table, listening to the Dingoes - and wondering how Oz was doing - when a cute guy she saw around campus a couple times came over to ask her to dance.

“Hey, I’m Parker,” he introduced himself while they moved and grooved to the music.

“Buffy,” she replied with a smile. It was nice to be dealing with a normal guy, not a vampire and not a TA with selective hearing. True, she had Jon, but he didn’t seem interested in her, so maybe some flirting and smoochies with this guy (if he proved worthy) would help break her dry spell.

Once the song finished, he offered to get drinks and meet her in a quiet corner so they could talk.

“…It just made me think about living for the moment, you know?” Parker asked what felt like a rhetorical question.

She nodded and said, “Sure, that makes sense.” Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a bright flash of yellow that reminded her of…Spike. What the hell was he doing here? And with Harmony of all people? “Can you excuse me for a second? I saw an old girlfriend with a guy who is bad news.”

“No problem, it’s good that you’re watching out for her. Do you need back up in case he gets physical?” Parker offered.

Buffy gave him a once-over and tried not to laugh in his face. He wasn’t in bad shape by human standards, but he didn’t look like he’d be able to take a punch by Xander, much less Spike. Her heart clenched momentarily at the thought of Xander, but she had to push it aside to help Harmony. “That’s okay, he shouldn’t be that big of a problem. I’ll be back as soon as I can.”

She caught up to the couple before they were able to head upstairs. “Hey, Harmony! I need--” she cut off when she grabbed Harmony’s hand and noticed a distinct lack of a pulse. “Is this new?”

“Blondie bear and I are still kind of new, but our sex is beyond amazing!” Harmony gushed.

Buffy cringed, “TMI, Harmony, and I was referring to the vampire thing.”

Wrapping her arm around Spike’s waist, Harmony said flippantly, “Nah, that happened at graduation. Everything was so cray that day. Hey! I rhymed!”

“That’s wonderful, Harm,” Spike muttered with a roll of his eyes. “All alone, Slayer? Everyone get sick of you?” he tried to goad her. “Or maybe you got them all killed?”

“What are you doing here, Spike? Dru dump you again?” Buffy shot back. “Her taste is improving if she did.”

“Not really,” Harmony interrupted, “she left him for a fungus demon. Talk about eww.”

Spike glared at her. “Time to go, Pet,” he ordered, grabbing her hand roughly.

“Yeah, you won’t be able stop us when we have the Gem of Amara!” Harmony taunted Buffy.

“Shut up, Harmony!” he hissed as they left the party, ignoring her complaints that they didn’t get to have any fun yet.

Normally Buffy would just mention the gem thing the next time she saw Giles, but she practically heard the capitalization in the name. Cute Parker would have to wait until she took care of this…dammit!

She found him and made her excuses but offered her number in case he wanted to continue the conversation another time. He looked sad to see her go, however he understood friendship responsibilities. If he only knew…

Giles’ apartment…

While he started researching the Gem of Amara, Giles looked at Buffy curiously and inquired, “You could have just called and told me this rather than interrupting your night. Why did you come over to tell me?”

She paused and wondered that herself now that he mentioned it. “I don’t know…I guess I just miss everyone - especially now because of Xander - and just wanted to see you.” She bit her lip nervously and asked, “Do you mind?”

Throwing caution to the wind, he got up and gathered her in a paternal hug. “Of course not, dear girl. I miss the group as well,” he assured her. “I just want you to enjoy college as much as you can.”

“I was!” Buffy promised him, “I was even taking to a cute guy about living in the moment ‘cause his dad died with stuff unfinished.”

“That’s true of everyone who dies; at least those who die suddenly. I suppose if you know you have a limited time left you could make a…what’s it called? A bucket list?” he asked and she nodded. “Otherwise, it’d be exhausting to try to live everyday as if it were your last.”

“I guess,” she answered thoughtfully. “It just sounded so romantic the way he said it…like he would understand my life and stuff.”

“Please don’t tell me you’re thinking of telling him that you’re the Slayer! Remember the boy from your sophomore year?” Giles implored her. He also thought it sounded like a line to get her to sleep with him, but he wasn’t going to say that.

“No…it’s more fun when they find out on their own,” she teased.

A/N: I was running out of time, so I ended it there.
