Geek Update

Last weekend was Desucon: Cosplay & Japan, a geek convention focusing on ... cosplay and Japan. It's.. it's sort of right there in the name, yeah. I volunteered to be on crew for the event, and I spent my day checking tickets, helping people in the info booth, gathering contestants for a Pokémon tournament, helping out at the photo stand, and generally having a very good time observing all the lively geek culture. So much fun cosplay!

The picture above is me and one of my friends on crew. Christian was also helping out, mostly manning the photo stand. He was there with instant cameras and gave out polaroid pictures. It seemed to be a pretty popular thing, hopefully we can offer this at the next convention too!

I'm always too busy at these things to take pictures of my own, there's a neat gallery here if you want to look at what Norwegian cosplayers are up to! (it's a public album, but seems you need to be logged on to FB to be able to view it).

Yesterday was Back to the Future Day ... I should of course have posted this yesterday, but I ran out of time ..............

Cinemateket did a double feature of the two first films in the trilogy, it was almost completely sold out! I am a little disappointed that no one cosplayed, but on the other hand, I was too chicken to show up wearing two ties, inside out pockets, and shiny headwear, so I guess I can't complain. I did wear my super swag Vans, tho. MY BABES.

Part of me wants to mount plates and wheels on these, oh man.

Filmkafeen, the café at the cinema, had one night only milkshakes on the menu. "LOU. GIVE ME A MILK! CHOCOLATE!". And it was so goddamn delicious, I hope, hope, hope they'll add it to their regular menu.

The first film was one of my absolute favourite things when I was a kid. It came out a year before I was born, but my parents rented it for me once, and errr it was a mistake on their part, because every time we went to the video rental store, I picked out two things. The Little Mermaid, and Back to the Future. I watched them a lot. I always thought Marty was really cool when I was a kid, now... not so much, maybe? And when did George McFly get so hot? .... ehem.
As a side note, I do wish I'd never seen Clowny Clown Clown, because every time I see Crispin Glover, it's all I can think of. :/

It still baffles me how well the first film has aged, how re-watchable it is 30 years later. I feel like you could easily introduce new viewers to this now, and they'd fall in love with it.

The cast, the setting, the action, humour, suspense, the characters, the music. My brain still melts trying to keep Back in Time and Power of Love straight. LET'S FACE IT, IS THE SAME MUSIC WITH DIFFERENT LYRICS. RIGHT? RIGHT?

I have never really paid much attention to the sequels, I couldn't quite remember what the second one was going to be about, but it was a lot funnier than I remembered it (even though it starts out kind of shaky, AND THEY JUST DUMP JENNIFER TO GET HER OUT OF THE WAY LIKE... "OH SHIT, WE CAN'T HAVE THIS GIRL DRAG US DOWN").
All the throwbacks to the original, the effect shots placing people into scenes from the first one. It's confusing in the best of ways, I love it! Is it just me, or do they swear a lot more in the second and third one?

We actually went straight home and watched the third one as well, I think it's a lot better than the second one! So many Doc feels, hahahaha. Cinemateket has asked people on twitter and facebook whether they'd be interested in seeing the third one as well, so maybe I'll get to see it on the big screen soon! Would be nice.

The third film came out in 1990, and Michael J. Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1991. Jesus. I thought he was diagnosed a lot later than that. My grandfather had Parkinson's, so I've grown up around it and seen how terribly debilitating it can be. When my grandfather died, we asked people to donate money to a Parkinson's disease foundation instead of buying flowers.
I saw this picture of Michael J. Fox trying on the first pair of self-lacing Nike Mag sneakers (THE FUTURE IS NOW) on tumblr earlier, and it breaks my heart a little, because yeah. Technology like that means everything to someone who physically struggles with fiddly things, like tying shoelaces.

Sad thoughts about the actual 2015 aside, I had a blast last night. The crowd was really good, people applauded each film, and there were cheers whenever the date October 21 2015 was mentioned. I'll definitely be heading out to see the third one if they decide to screen it.

geekage, random, film babble, the future is now
