Comics Revisited

I went out actively looking for comic books to buy, but came home empty handed (actually not true, I bought the two first issues of Hellboy~!). I'm mostly interested in the classic Marvel stuff, modern computerised drawing styles do nothing for me - I find most of it really bland and boring to look at. "Realistic" is not better, you guys.

The comic book store did have a good selection of the Marvel Essentials collections, but these are in black and white! Augh, whyyy. Comic books like this are supposed to be full colour~ I guess I could break down and buy one (or five...) just to get to read most of the essential (HAH!) plot lines, but... :| I'd rather find full colour reprints. There was a nice full colour collection called Marvel Firsts - trouble is, I'm not really interested in first appearances, I'm interested in story lines!

So since I couldn't find what I was looking for, I've ... sampled some of the early issues of X-Men to see if that really is what I'm interested in, and oh my god. I stop to screen cap every other page, because I can't concentrate from laughing so hard. This shit is just hilarious! I can't believe I'd forgotten how much fun comic books could be. What.

Here are some of my absolute favourite panels so far (I could post tons more XD):

Marvel Girl (Jean Grey) spiriting away an unruly bunch of girls, because they were all over Angel. Chickadee is a term I need to adopt into my regular vocabulary.

This is more a revelation than a funny moment, since I've never read any Thor or Avengers... Thor has a secret identity? THOR? Really? And posing as a doctor? Ahahahahah. Oh, I want to see them try to pull this off in the films.

Probably my favourite panel ever. So far, anyway. RADIATION MAKES YOU EVIL, YOU GUYS. SO WATCH OUT! He was incidentally passing through one of Tony Stark's weapon plants when this happened. Iron Man tried to warn him, but to no avail. The rest of the issue revolves around Iron Man and the X-Men trying to get Angel back to normal. Priceless stuff.

I love the amount of crossover that happens in the Marvel universe, but it makes it REALLY DIFFICULT to decide what to read and when :| Right now I'm just chronologically going through the classic X-Men stuff, but Iron Man looks intriguing indeed. I have no clue how any of the newer series compare. I just love Jack Kirby's art so much!
