Chapter Four: Pinky Promise

Jonghyun crept around the room and took out a table cloth, snacks, and the most famous banana milk. He went into his room and set the whole indoor picnic set up, the matching cups and plates, nicely on the floor. He got this tea set from his older sister and hasn’t used it since he got it. But he was glad to have a reason now. He was trying to be as quiet as possible, knowing his friend was passed out for his nap on the leveled bed.

He poured the banana milk into the tea pot and placed it in the middle of the cloth, and put a bag full of cookies on a platter. This will be a very memorable day for the two munchkins. But Kibum had to wake up first, Jonghyun was close to screaming in his ear, but he restrained when he saw how peaceful he looked. He went downstairs to get napkins, he bumped into his umma on the way out,” Oomph! Oh, Jonghyun, what brings you downstairs hunny?” he looked up and held up the napkins,” I needed napkins for Kibum and I.” She looked at the small boy and crouched down,” What for?” He stuffed the napkins in his pants and replied quietly,” I’m going to marry him, umma.” She laughed and patted his head,” OK, just make sure to come back down later so I can congratulate you two.”

He opened the door and Kibum was already awake, fingering the snacks. He looked up and pointed to the whole thing,” What’s this for?” Jonghyun flailed his arms and took out a napkin, placing it on Kibum’s lap,” We are having an indoor picnic!” Kibum’s little almond eyes shined, he picked up a cookie and took a bite, offering the next one to Jonghyun,” It’s good! Try it.” Jonghyun took a bite and nodded, he picked up the tea pot and poured it in both of the cups. Kibum was happy with the event, the simple things like this were the best.

Jonghyun was nervous; he didn’t know when to say it, or how to put the ring on. At the mall he saw the coin machine and got a ring for him. It was plastic but it did have a meaning to it. He cleared his throat until he looked up,” Kibum, we have been boyfriends for a year, and . . . will you marry me?” Kibum looked at the ring that was being placed on his finger, he giggled,” Jonghyun, you are so silly. We can only get married when we are older, like ten more years older. I’ll keep this ring, but, I have to marry you later.” Jonghyun didn’t plan it out like that, but it worked too. He held out his pinky,” Then you have to promise to marry me when you are older; pinky swear.” Kibum joined pinkies and the both laughed. The day went on like that, eating cookies, drinking milk, and making promises.

Fourteen years later:

“You promised, dummy.” He smiled and got in the newlywed house,” And I didn’t break it. Kim Jonghyun, I keep my promises.”
