Chapter Three: School
They both got on the crowded bus and made their way to their assigned seat. Jonghyun saw a spill and quickly wiped it up with his shirt before letting Kibum sit down. His feet dangled from the tall seat, they crossed and he was holding on tightly to his bag. Kibum shook and started rubbing his head,” OW!” Jonghyun looked at the hurting boy and glanced behind them; Jinki. Jonghyun sat up in his seat and turned around to face the second grader, he scowled,” Why did you do that for? He didn’t do anything to you, do you always have to start trouble?!” Jinki snickered and nudged his friend to look at the younger one,” Why isn’t it the two gay kiddies. Why don’t you stay in your seat and be a good dinosaur, hmm?” Jonghyun wanted to do something about him, he really did. But if that meant losing face to his parents, it just wouldn’t be right. He sat back down in his seat and put his arm around Kibum, possessively. He also knew that Jinki had a thing for Kibum, boys his age only bothered people they liked. Only a few weeks ago he heard that Jinki liked someone in Mrs. Lee’s class, the class that Kibum is in. Funny how that happened, like pure coincidence. Ever since that day Jonghyun has been a tad overprotective, but Kibum hasn’t got it yet.
They separated into their classes and waved goodbye. Jonghyun went up to his classroom door and saw a sign, an absent teacher sign, Mr. Jung was out today and we had to go to another classroom for the day. He skimmed through the list until he found his name and teacher; he had to go to Kibum’s class, lucky him. He left for the class and Yoona followed him along with Sooyoung, he knocked on the door until a familiar face opened it; Minho. He had an awkward facial expression and opened the door wider for them to come in, he glanced at Mrs. Lee for assistance. She smiled and welcomed them,” So these are the kids from Mr. Jung’s class? Welcome, there will be more people from other classes coming to stay here for the day. You can find a buddy to be with for the day.” Jonghyun darted for Kibum but what he saw was an occupied Kibum with a bully named Jinki. What was he doing with Jinki, his bully? Jonghyun sat down next to Kibum and smiled, hugging his small shoulders with one arm,” I’m going to be here with you all day.” He emphasized the ‘all day’ enough that Jinki looked up and scowled.
Before he knew it lunch time was here, this was his chance to make Jinki back off. He grabbed his lunch pail and headed over to the table, he sat down next to Kibum and scooted his seat closer until they touched. His umma made him two meals, one for him and the other for Kibum, like always. Kibum opened the green panda lunchbox and took out his sandwich and everything else that was crammed in the box. Jonghyun took out a carrot from the plastic zip lock bag and poked it in Kibum’s mouth; he ate it obediently still not understanding the situation. Kibum was a pretty quiet kid and hated to be in the mush of things, of course though he didn’t know he was pretty mushed in this one.
Jinki took out a chocolate chip cookie and handed it to Kibum; he took it and thanked him before filling up those baby cheeks of his with the cavity prone dessert. Jinki grinned while he watched the younger one enjoy his snack, maybe liking someone in kindergarten wasn’t so bad, and maybe that’s why Jonghyun is always so happy. But Jinki wasn’t a boyfriend or girlfriend stealer, he was a bully. Bullies steal stuff, push around little kids, and have no happiness for kids like Kibum. He didn’t like Kibum, he liked the thought of him, but seeing how Jonghyun takes care of him and cares that Jinki was even near him made him rethink. He couldn’t handle taking care of another boy; he could barely take care of himself.
By the end of the day they were all back at their houses. Kibum was spending play date time with Jonghyun and he was more than happy. Although he didn’t understand the whole weirdness of the entire day. He wanted to know what Jonghyun was thinking about. He could be thinking about lots of things like what two plus two is, or how you spell ‘sky’, and even what to eat for dinner. But Jonghyun wasn’t thinking about these subjects, he was thinking about how grateful he is to have such a great boyfriend. A boyfriend like Kibum deserves a special day, like tomorrow after school. A special event for Jonghyun’s special boy.
