Dream a Little Dream

Last night I had two very intriguing dreams -- both were intensely vivid and enjoyable.

In my first dream I am attempting to convince Jake that snakes are indeed capable of affection. I offer proof by summoning Muffin, my 30-foot python. I stamp my foot three times (deaf, they are... Muffin responds to the vibration); suddenly there is a movement, a motion -- not a sound, really, but more the radiating wavelength of an approaching enormity. Muffin slithers heavily into the room; I stand, and he wraps himself around me until his large, robust head rests on my shoulder, eyes peacefully glazed, his dry tongue flicking absently in and out of my ear. I feel so comforted that I am lulled into slumber, while Jake watches with unmitigated horror. Suddenly it occurs to me that instead of Muffin's rough, cool body next to mine, I feel surrounded by very hot, moist air, and I realize Muffin is swallowing me head first. The fact does not bother me in the least -- I continue feeling relaxed and tranquil.

Still, I awake with a start. I do not feel as if I had been jostled awake by the effects of a nightmare -- in fact, I feel, oddly, that I want to return to Muffin's gullet. I fall back asleep almost at once.

For the first time in many years, I have a flying dream. As always, it is wonderful; exhilarating; sensuously, achingly euphoric; joyful beyond redemption. I leap off cliffs or building tops and free fall until nearly slamming into the earth; then, arching my back, I sail magnificently up into the stratosphere, warm air cooling rapidly. I expertly avoid electrical wires, soaring over spires and steeples and weathervanes, above tree lines, bearing witness to impossibly verdant vistas and rock-lined, azure ocean coves. I fly to the apex of my volitant abilities, and then again free fall, the wind rushing past my face, taking away all of my breath, and then head starward once more, only on this attempt I am able to achieve an even higher altitude, and repeating the cycle I zoom up and back, until I am heading through the Milky Way, amid blue-white, shimmering, gossamer light and beyond.

Hmmm. "Calling Dr. Freud… come in, Dr Freud!"
