Death and dating James Wilson had changed several things about Amber Volakis. The first thing that it had changed was the way that she'd thought about herself in the world. Right now in the real world she had no place. She'd been sitting on the damned bus for what had seemed like forever before she'd been in the room talking to West, and now she understood how precarious her life actually was, and how fragile ( ... )

"Is it really you?" Wilson asked, his voice cracking with such a variety of emotion that he didn't really know how he felt. Part of him wanted to grab her and hold her, feel her body, moving and alive against him. It had been so long, too long, and he needed to know that she was real. Another part of him though, the bigger part, was scared. How could she possibly be here? He'd seen her die, had been holding her when it happened. Her death had torn his life apart and left him alone in more ways than one.

Suddenly, something itched in the back of Wilson's mind, like he'd forgotten something very important, something that meant more to him than he realized. The thought quickly passed though, and his attention was once again solely on Amber.

"Please tell me it's really you."

When he asked if it was really her, Amber turned around quickly, whirling towards a voice that was so filled with emotion. She smiled for a moment, because he was actually here. He was actually here. A part of her wondered if this was someone sort of place between life and death where she'd been waiting and he died.

And then she grinned, and she took a step towards him, seeing the years that he'd mentioned on his face. When she got close enough, her fingers touched by his eyes and the new worry lines that hadn't been there when she'd last memorized his face.

"It's really me, James."

It was almost too good to be true. She turned to look at him and it was as if nothing had ever happened to her. She was gorgeous and young and alive and Wilson barely managed to stifle a soft sob as her fingers gently touched his face.

His eyes closed and he pressed against the light touch, only to open again when she spoke. He looked at her, really looked at her, as if he looked away she'd disappear on him again. Then, suddenly, he pulled her into a fierce hug. "Amber," he whispered, voice breaking just slightly. "I've missed you so much."

The sound of that stifled sob surprised her, and her hand cupped his cheek. His face felt warm, even warmer than it had when she'd been clinging to him as she froze. He was so warm and alive.

Amber wrapped her arms around him when he pulled her into a fierce hug. She didn't feel like she would break, and she wasn't worried about breaking him, so she just held onto him for dear life until she kissed him quickly.

"I'm here now. I'm not going anywhere."

Tears filled Wilson's eyes as he held onto her. This was almost too good to be true, and he didn't know if he could deal with it if it turned out that this was just some trick on West's part. He just didn't think he could take losing her again.

Oh, but he was going to take what he could get here. Not for the first time, Wilson started wondering if he really ever wanted to get home again. Sure, strange and scary things happened here, but strange and scary things happened in the real world too. The difference was that here Wilson had the two people that meant most to him in his life. Here, he had House and Amber ( ... )

Amber had been a little afraid to close her eyes. She'd been afraid of waking them up and finding that she was back aboard that damn bus where she could do nothing but cross and uncross her ankles and think about how many random medical conditions that she could come up with. (The answer, at last count, was fourteen thousand six hundred and three, if she only counted obscure ones.) It had been a little like prepping for House's game when she'd done it ( ... )

Wilson didn't quite know how to start. So much had happened since she'd died and he could tell from the look on her face that there was no love lost there. He'd spent the better part of the last 20 years making up excuses for House, but this time, he was more serious than he'd ever been. Wilson had spent the whole time he was away from PPTH, back just after Amber had died, trying to work out just how much he blamed House. He'd wanted to, hell, he'd needed to, but when it came down to it, Amber had shown up at the bar and gotten on that bus of her own free will ( ... )

Amber was at least glad to hear that James had left for a while. James's leaving was a break in the pattern that she'd been attempting to do for so long. Funny how the biggest change in it had come after her death. Well, until he went back. A surprised look met the news about Kunter, because she never could have imagined that he would do something like that. She'd liked Kunter and might have considered accepting his invitation for dinner if James hadn't come along first ( ... )

Wilson laughed nervously and ran a hand through his hair before squeezing the back of his neck. "Actually, I don't really know what you were wearing, but I doubt that was the case. He wouldn't go into much detail, but what I got from him was that you were more like his conscience gone wrong. Like you'd give him advice that sounded good, but everything would end up going wrong. He tried everything to get rid of you. You should've seen him. He was... broken."

He really couldn't think of a better word for it. When Cuddy had delivered House to his office that day, the day House had finally realized it was something he couldn't fix, he'd been so scared. Wilson had never seen him like that before. The memory still haunted Wilson. It made him want to... his thoughts trailed off, as if he didn't know what he'd been thinking at all. He looked at Amber, silently pleading with her to believe him ( ... )

Her being House's conscience made her frown. It didn't really work well for her. It, mixed with the idea that she was a female version of House without the neediness made her frown quickly. Out of all the people he could have had dreamed up, it needed to be her. The idea was enough to make her shiver, and enough to make her want to find House and start to screw with him ( ... )

Wilson watched Amber with a level of trepidation he hadn't felt in quite some time. He really wasn't sure how she'd take the news about House and his eventual breakdown. He knew that there was some... tension, to say the least, between the two of them. And he was at the centre of it. He understood why Amber had her problems, even before she died she hadn't liked how House had treated Wilson. He knew, though he didn't let on, that she thought it was an unhealthy relationship, that House was too needy and that Wilson ate need for breakfast. That was true, but it wasn't the only truth to the relationship. Fact was, Wilson needed House as much as House needed him. It didn't mean he loved Amber any less, quite to the contrary, he just didn't think she understood, hadn't been given enough time to understand just why he and House had been friends for so long ( ... )
