Kind of Ripped Off an Old Lady Today...

I noticed that a local lady had posted on CL selling off her old Star Trek stuff. YAY! So ilthuain and I drove out to Vancouver to battle the street numbering system that makes NO GODDAMN SENSE once again for my craigslist whims (last time it was for a cat tree). Like last time, it was kind of a headache. Much like last time, it was also worth it.

She had a lot of not-so-interesting stuff in her collection, but one of the reasons I wanted to go out there was that she had IDIC stuff. I've been scouring ebay for decently-sized IDIC pins and whatnot, and they are kind of hard to find. Little ones go for about ten bucks. Big ones are usually in the range of 20. Thus far, I've only found one of those, and it was a necklace for eighteen. I waffled and lost the auction.

This lady had TEN (two necklaces, eight pins). I was so thrilled. When I asked her how much, she said $1.20 each.

$1.20!!!

So, yeah. I bought all ten. There were a few gold+silver, a few plain silver, a red+silver, and a black+silver. I might paint or tweak them a bit, and at the price I paid I won't even feel guilty doing it. These might be going on my bridal party, my parents, the groom, and whomever else stands still long enough for me to pin one on them at the wedding. Or they might end up in the decor along with those red, blue and yellow jars I got from IKEA. Who knows??? Either way, I'm happy!

The lady also had a set of 70 insignia pins that is worth a chunk of change (far more than she was selling the whole collection for). Among other things, it had as single little Romulan emblem pin. ilthuain wanted that pin, but we didn't have COH to buy the whole set. He asked her if she'd break it. I figured she wouldn't, and even told her we'd understand if she didn't want to. She thought about it, and said for breaking the set she'd have to charge five dollars for the pin.

I've seen that pin sell for twice that on its own on ebay, so we took it, but I wouldn't have broken that set. I was tempted to just buy her whole collection and go sell it myself, but I haven't the patience for ebay, nor did I really have the cash (she wanted a hundred bucks for everything, which is way less than what everything she had was worth). I ended up walking away with my 10 IDICs, the Romulan pin, and a few other goodies (just the stuff I wanted to keep for myself, basically) for only $27.

wedding, star trek
