HP Confessional

We've all done things we're not proud of. Comically misplaced modifiers, misspelled names of canon characters, and, oh yes, Mary Sue. Even if we never wrote about her, until we learned who she was and why nobody liked her, she seemed like a pretty damn good idea ( Read more... )

I was (and still am) a sad purveyor of moodfics. And not the good type. When I started I was awash in cliches while truly believing I was original, and only through hours of research (read as: browsing fanfic day and night for months) did I realize that I was not.

That, and for the life of me, I can not stay consistent on my spelling (and the usage of my spellings) of the word "cum". Is it "come", "cum" (which some people find offensive), cumming, coming... It confuses me deeply. Thus, I tend to avoid using it as much as possible.

And damn me being at the library and not having a copy of OotP available *heads off to stacks to find one*

AH! Finally, the clarification I've needed for so long! (see, this is what happens when you spend so much time reading trashy smut - these thoughts, they take over!). Thank you!

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with metaphor-fic. Maybe you should write metaphor-filled humour dark fic (Luna/Snape snark fest anyone? Sorry, couldn't help myself)? Seems like that would take care of the problem.

You know, I have a problem with "cum" because it sounds so slangy (and muggle). Sometimes that can work -- i.e. in a PWP where it's all about TEH SEXSEXSEX, or when the characters are portrayed as experienced sexual libertines -- but in many HP fics it clashes with the narrative tone. If the author is taking Snape's POV, for instance... would he think in terms of "cum?"

Chloe the dancer! McGonnegall! At least you didn't call Snape "Serverus"... did you? ;D

I absolve thee. Go forth and sin no more.

Thankfully, no. I was familiar with the Latin:

severus, -a, -um adj 'stern, severe'

::grins::
::hugs her Latin dictionary::

(As you might imagine, I got quite a kick out of the name Remus Lupin--a more obvious werewolf there never was.)

Thank you, Father. ;)

I once used the phrase "welcome to your prostate" in a fic.

Never again, I swear it.

I had a horrible Mary-Sue, but, in another fandom. She had about 10 middle names. x_x But I never got around to writing anything about her.

Most of my early characters, in some form or another, were based on me. In my very early fanfic-when-I-didn't-know-what-fanfic-was I didn't even bother with Mary-Sueage, I just happily wrote myself into canon without any explanation whatsover. So much shame. *hangs head*

Are you aware that we share quite a few interests? Hee! Keats!

Ten middle names? Ye gods.

Indeed we do. That's why I friended you in the first place :)

One of my many reasons for desiring greatly to visit England: so that I may weep over the grave of Keats.
