I think the greatest thing about this pseudo-blog is being able to traverse time to become mesmerized by things that once held your fascination. Case in point with my previous post quoting Rebecca Gilman's play Boy Gets Girl. I really like the line of inquiry she was onto. "Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs" is a book I may have to pick up, after the suggestion of a friend. Supposedly it deals with how television and movies could be skewing our perception of healthy relationships and expectations. If so, that book may only help solidify my resolve started with "Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television." That was a weird book, but also an enlightening one. I'm quite ashamed to say that i'm still very much under the T.V.'s control. There's just so little effort put into enjoy TV when compared to a book, but eventually i hope to turn it off for good.
After four arguments, 1984 became a whole lot more significant. Before i didn't enjoy it that much, and i was more interested in the history of the world of 1984. Now I see 1984 = 2009 almost. The pandering to lowest common denominators, obsession with random things that are of little importance over all, and the way entertainment must seep into everything. News should not be entertaining when it is billed as unbiased informative programming. That nonsense should be left to John Stewart!
I wouldn't go so far as to say that this whole fixation that people (in general, myself included of course) have with such asinine curiosities is engineered by a manipulative overlord behind the curtains, but i think it's more of an inevitable side-effect of the media we all immerse ourselves in. I really hope in some ways that there is some massive shock that brings us back into shape. I actually kind of want the world economy to fail, i want everything to go into disarray in the hopes that we can build up something better for us all. The only thing i can hope for is that Obama is every bit as much as a Socialistic Despot as Fox and Republicans want us to believe~
