Chapter 5
Yunho parked the car and didn’t bother to lock it. He ran toward the entrance of the hospital disregarding any obstacle in his haste to find Jae. The phone call had just informed him that Jae had been taken there by ambulance. His details as Jae’s emergency contact were in Jae’s wallet and that was how the staff had found him. He ran to the enquiry desk and just shouted out his lover’s name. Immediately he was grabbed by the arm by an elderly doctor who gently pulled him to one side.
“Are you Jung Yunho?” The voice was whispered as if what was about to be said was some sort of secret.
“Yes…yes…where’s Jae? What’s happened to him …where is he….?” Yunho realised he was panicking but he couldn’t control himself.
“I need to talk to you in a more private area.” The doctor tried to maneuver him into a side room but Yunho resisted.
“No I must see Jae…please…where is he?” His voice sounded like a plea but the doctor knew it was important to enlighten the young man before he let him see his patient.
“I can’t let you see him until I speak to you. Come and sit down.” The doctor led Yunho to an easy chair in the side room and sat in the one facing him.
“There’s no easy way to tell you this so I’ll just be straight forward with you. Jae was attacked tonight and suffered a serious sexual assault.” The doctor looked at the young man’s face as he tried to absorb the information. He had had to give this kind of news before so he knew it wasn’t easy for the recipient to accept. He waited patiently while Yunho just stared at him, as if trying to translate what the doctor had said. It was as if he was listening to a foreign language and he was trying to decode the doctor’s words.
“Do you mean he has been…………” Yunho couldn’t quite say the word. He knew what he wanted to say but it was as if saying it would make it real and he really didn’t want this to have happened to Jae.
“You mean he has been………….” Yunho struggled so the doctor took his hands in his and looked at him with compassion.
“Yes” The doctor waited for Yunho to say something and when nothing was forthcoming he continued to speak. “Let me tell you the details. I know it’s painful to hear when a loved one has been hurt but it’s important for Jae that I tell you as much as I can. This is with his permission of course” Yunho just stared and nodded, he tried to swallow but the lump in his throat was making it difficult.
“Can I continue?’ at Yunho’s nod the doctor began to fill Yunho in on the details.
“Jae was hit on the head from behind and anally raped. He tried to fight off his attacker and was beaten. He has no serious injuries, but he looks quite battered. The police are in with him now. He has had an examination and blood tests. These are for sexually transmitted diseases. As is usual with cases of rape, protection wasn’t used so we have to test for these” Yunho swallowed and the doctor paused in case Yunho wanted to speak. When he remained silent the doctor continued. “I understand that you are his lover so it is important you know as much as I can tell you because this will affect you too. Do you understand what I’m telling you Mr. Jung?’ Yunho gave a slight nod and closed his eyes. The tears seeped from his eyes leaving a trail down his face - a face that was whiter than his usually pale complexion.
“He will have to stay in the hospital tonight as he is in shock and I want to keep an eye on his low blood pressure. There are internal injuries, but I think they will heal without intervention. I would like to examine him again in the morning though. The police will take his clothing for forensic evidence so someone needs to bring him some more for his return home. A specialist nurse will talk to you both before he goes home. Have you understood what I have told you” The kindly doctor waited for Yunho to show some sign of acknowledgment. Yunho’s eyes met the doctors for the first time.
“Can I go to him now?” Yunho sounded very desperate and the doctor wanted nothing more than to take him to his lover but he knew the police would probably still be there. He didn’t want anything to disrupt the giving of Jae’s statement.
“Before I take you to him I need some personal details for the paperwork” at Yunho’s deep sigh the doctor’s squeezed his hand.
“Wait one moment” the doctor went to the door and stopped a passing nurse and asked her to see if the police had finished with Jae yet. He returned to the room and went through the paperwork with Yunho. As they finished the nurse returned and nodded at the doctor.
“Come”. He led Yunho through the emergency department and through a door that said private. They then entered another door and two police officers rose from seats beside the bed and walked to the door.
Yunho didn’t even acknowledge their presence as his eyes fell upon Jae lying on his side, curled up. He took in Jae’s face and gasped as he saw the black eye and bruising. He sat in the chair beside the bed and took Jae’s hands from where they were clasped beneath his head.
“Baby I………..Oh god baby…” Yunho at last let the tears flow freely as he sobbed into Jae’s hands.
“Yunho don’t…please don’t…..” Jae began to sob “Yunho I’m sorry……I’m sorry, really sorry.” Jae sounded desperate, as if he needed Yunho to forgive him for some misdeed.
“Baby you don’t need to be sorry. Oh my god I’ll fucking kill whoever done this. I’ll kill them with my bare hands!” the doctor took one more look at the two sobbing men and left the room closing the door behind him gently.
Dong Wook and Min arrived at the hospital at 8.30 am. They received a call from Yunho in the early hours of the morning and what they were told had shaken them. They entered the hospital and were taken through to the room where Jae lay asleep. Yunho, upon hearing their arrival rose from his seat and ushered them out of the room.
“How is he Yunho?” Dong Wook spoke in whispered tones so as not to disturb his sleeping friend.
Yunho took one look at his friend and broke down. Between sobs he told them what he knew. As he spoke his sobbing intensified. Dong Wook cradled his friend in his arms and fought back his own tears.
“Dong Wook I need to contact Chun and Su. They need to know and I think Jae needs his friends. Oh God…. we’re all meant to be meeting for lunch!”
“I can’t deal with anything at the moment Dong Wook. Can you sort things out for me” Yunho knew his friend would do anything he could at a time like this.
“Anything, Yunho. What do you need?” Yunho moved back into the room and took a key from his bag, handing it to his friend.
“This is Jae’s key. Go to his place and fetch some clothes here for him. He needs everything -even trainers. The police have taken everything with them. In fact pack all of his clothes and take them to my place for me. He’s going to stay with me.” Yunho nodded to himself, convinced that he was making the right decision.
“Ok, I’ll be back in about an hour. I’ll tell the others to meet at my place for lunch so I can fill them in on the situation. Is that ok?” Dong Wook didn’t want to do or say anything to the others without Yunho’s say so.
Yunho nodded and hugged Dong Wook tightly. “Thank you. Oh god, how are we going to deal with this? I don’t know how to deal with this…..I don’t know what to do……” Yunho sounded desperate and Dong Wook could feel the tears fill his eyes as for the first time ever his friend appeared to be lost and confused.
“We’ll deal with it Yunho. Together, all of us. We’ll support him and care for him together. Ok? You’re not on your own here Yunho, neither is Jae”. Both men then entered the private room and saw Min sitting beside Jae…his head low and his shoulders trembling. As soon as Yunho had told them what had happened he had slipped into Jae’s room to be with his best friend. Dong Wook gently pulled Min to his feet and held him.
“Come on love. Let’s go and do these things for our friends. We’ll be back here in an hour or so”.
With that both men gave Yunho a brief hug and walked away.
Yunho sat beside the bed again and continued to look at his lover. Jae stirred and Yunho leaned forward and gently stroked the hair from his forehead. Jae looked up at him and just stared. They sat like that for ages; Yunho is stroking and Jae staring, until a nurse entered the room. She introduced herself and pulled up a chair next to Yunho. She was the specialist nurse and she’d come to speak with them about the implications of a sexual attack and what support would be offered to them. Thirty minutes later she left them with a bunch of literature, appointments for test results and trauma counseling. Yunho put everything in his bag along with the small bag of items belonging to Jae that the police didn’t need to take.
As he sat in the chair the door opened and Dong Wook and Min walked in. The older man placed a bag on the end of the bed and Min walked around to face Jae. He gently stroked his face with the back of his hand. He walked to Yunho and kissed the top of his head.
“Ring us.” With that both men walked from the room.
