Born to us (at age 4) April 2003 - Passed away 6 July 2010.
He was fine when Brandon got home from work, Brandon let him out to go potty. He came back in, hacked some and couldn't stand or walk. Brandon got him on his feet, checked him over for snake bites, spider bites, anything and found nothing.
I got home from work about 30-45 minutes later and he had thrown up a few times. We ate dinner, checked on him and he was going between panting really hard and breathing very slow. We found a 24 hour animal hospital, Brandon took him in - he couldn't walk or stand anymore. We said our good byes, final "I love you"s and Brandon made me take Trent to the park.
At first, no news was good news. By the time we were heading home I knew he was gone. Met Brandon on the way home, got Trent in bed and we cried together for a while. He had fluid around his heart that was pressing on his lungs - it was either cancer or heart failure. Bad prognosis on both so Brandon made the very hard decision to put down our best friend.
We'll be getting his ashes and a box with his paw print in a couple weeks. We had a "wake" last night, sat around with a couple of beers, remembering just about every moment that we had with him. Talking about how it was his time, how he was ready to go, how these last couple years in Cali were his doggy retirement. If he had to step in wet grass it was probably from a sprinkler - not the buckets of rain like Washington.
I find myself looking for him, wanting to call him over to the table to clean up the food that Trent has thrown on the floor, waiting at the top of the stairs for him. I miss him a lot.
We love you Dutchy - I hope you're keeping God's side of the bed warm.
