actually, homeless people are more likely to be winos or junkies (or meth-heads) than pot-smokers, or else they are similarly incapacitated by untreated mental illness. but there are more than you might think who are neither addicts nor lunatics, perfectly rational people who are homeless for one reason or another. i have an online friend (he doesn't do LJ, though) who chose to live on the street for about three years when his then-wife threw him out of the house. he'd been unemployed for about a year, having been caught up in the dot-com collapse, and she felt that a husband's main purpose in her world was to support the family. he had some money coming in from his veteran's pension, and he calculated it carefully, and determined that he could live fairly well on his pension, as long as he didn't have to pay rent. and he lived in a relatively mild climate in central California. he even continued to spend a lot of time online, by hanging out in a local community college and using their connectivity. in return, he helped a lot of the students with their homework. he never accepted money from anyone, although if someone offered to buy him a meal or something, he'd take it. he often had more food than he could eat, which he gave to other homeless people. eventually he got work again, and also his mother died and left him all her remaining assets, so he's now living under a roof again - with a new fiancee. (and he's older than i am!)
i came perilously close to being homeless myself a couple of years ago, too...
