Obama + Florida: Day 22 and 23

Oct 24, 2008 12:34

Barack, the volunteer. The last couple days have been pretty crazy, spending the greater part of each day, doing assorted tasks like installing printers, hanging tackboards, organizing the office, data entry, and going door to door (sometimes in a full-on rainstorm) to spread the word about voting early. Something like a hundred thousand people voted early on the first day of Early Elections in Florida, and that means 100,000 less people in line during November 4th. Right now, Florida is in limbo. We're all on edge worrying about what's going to happen two weeks from now, whether our efforts will be enough to elect somebody that we believe in.

I don't want to sit back, do nothing and complain like when GWB stole the election in 2000. I wanted to do something, but I didn't know what. Now that I know what I can do, I'm putting aside my job search, my family and friends, my life to do what I think is right. The Obama ground campaign is completely staffed by people from all over the country who feel the same way. That's what makes it so energetic and important, that the nation is uniting to improve the country we live in, both in and outside the White House.

It's even more important that we all do something, especially if you've been contemplating volunteering but haven't yet. There's work to be done all over the country. Florida is teetering with 23 Electoral Votes and volunteers are lining up to offer housing to out-of-state volunteers. If you can go to a battleground state, TravelForChange.com will pay for your roundtrip flight. You can contact the local office to arrange housing. You can go to BarackObama.com to take part in Drive For Change and carpool to a battleground precinct in Nevada. You can make phone calls into Nevada from your home or from Obama campaign offices in Cali.

Get involved. You won't find a better opportunity to do something like this. And right now, the weather in Florida is heaven. It's warm and awesome.

Ask me if you have questions on coming out to another state, or even if you're looking to volunteer at a local office in The Bay or in LA.
