Johnny Dowd was cool…very strange, but in a good way. My mother would not have enjoyed this show, that’s as much as I can say. The final song Johnny played (“Wedding Day” I think it was?) I had heard on the Eclectic Company a couple of weeks ago when Robbie Fulks hosted. (You know, I forgot just how tall Robbie Fulks really is.) Kris can tell you more about this opening set, I’m sure he knew all of the words to all of the songs like a fanboy ( :-P, kidding, kidding.)
Bobby Bare Jr. kicked some MAJOR ass! Seriously, the man rocks. His band is extremely talented as well. The setlist included such truly awesome songs as “Dig Down”, “The Monk at the Disco”, “Flat Chested Girl From Maynardville” “I’ll Be Around” (the opener) “Strange Bird” “Terrible Sunrise” and of course, “Valentine”. One of the highlights was a new tune called “Mayonnaise Brain”. Of course, the tune itself wasn’t necessarily the highlight (not that it was bad or anything), but the band decided that they didn’t want the energy to fall, as it tends to with new songs, so they had the crowd request it and played the game “Oh, no, we’ve played that one too many times!...Ok, fine…we’ll play it…” It was pretty fun. I know I enjoyed it. Oh, I forgot to add, Robbie Fulks introduced him as "The Rich Man's Ryan Adams". Damn.
In between sets I talked to my buddies from Bloodshot (Scott, Thais and Rob). They want me back. I told Scott I’d e-mail him and he said he’d e-mail me if they needed somebody one of these days. During the break I talked to Leah and my daddy bought me a snoozy BBJ girly tee! It’s got a PBR logo on the front with Bobby’s name in it and the Bloodshot logo on the back. So, anyway, after the show, my dad grabbed the setlist and gave it to me (no one was stopping him!) We said hi to Johnny…he was surprised to see the ‘intergenerational’ pair of us at a show together. He’s playing with Neko in Indianapolis in June…road trip? Then Dad and I walked over to where Bobby was sitting to get my setlist signed and Rob walked up behind BBJ right as I was about to introduce myself and said “This is Rosie, she’s one of the best interns we’ve ever had” and BBJ was like “Oh yeah? That’s cool.” And he shook my hand and took my setlist and asked how to spell my name. So he signed it “Rosie + Tacos + Flowers” (how’s that for random, eh?) So, I went home happy (indeed!)
