That would be me.
So…time for an update on my rock’n’roll lifestyle…
On Friday I spent 3 hours on the sidewalk with my dear peeps. I got to meet Dreamin’ Judy, and she was happy to see my ears protected by her fabulous red toque. I also got to see Dr. Judy for the first time since…well, since that time she and Jared and I went to Spencer’s baseball game back in JUNE! (that was the last night before I went to Spain sigh) Susan blew me kisses from inside the lobby. And darling little Spencer and Dylan (my new best friends) waved and made faces and that sort of thing, mocking the fact that I was out in the cold. So, Mike Wafer was there, my dad’s best friend…it was cool to get to see him again…and Uyen too…and Laura…but anyway…
My mom was too tired for this event. After we got home, Dad said that that was the last show we’re taking her to. She slept right through Riviera’s set. Personally, I dug Riviera, and so did Ray. (he was standing with me, our first GA concert in Chicago together.) Ray was dancing along and bobbing his head. I think I’ll start downloading the mp3’s from Derek’s site. I got to meet Derek for the first time too. I hope I didn’t freak him out too much. (I’m not as weird in real life as I am on VC, right?)
Then Jeff came on…and now a list of some things for the non-participants to drool over:
Dash 7
Blasting Fonda
Gun
Pecan Pie
No Poetry
John Wesley Harding
Acuff Rose
Box Full of Letters
Shouldn’t Be Ashamed
I didn’t know that Spencer had Kawasaki. I knew that Judy treated him for something like that…wow…
(Totally weird fact…Dr. Judy worked across the hall from my GI before she moved away and my doc got a private practice. They used to talk about me.)
Overall, it was a really cool night.
Second day:
I got there at one thirty(ish) and hung out on the sidewalk with Bill and Laurie and Dick and Allison for several hours. At one point, Derek walked by, and into the Vic, he waved at me (wearing totally awesome sunglasses). He got a guitar and walked away…
We all freaked out when we saw Mikael (dear, darling Laptop Boy) walking up to the Vic (are they all going to play together???? Will Jeff bring out the entire band???? He’s wearing an orange shirt!!!!!) Then the rumors started flying (Is Glenn in town??? Is that a full band we hear???). Now, I’ve taught myself not to expect anything when it comes to these shows, otherwise there is bound to be some disappointment, so I tried my hardest not to imagine the way my heart would jump into my throat if I saw gorgeous Glenn walk onto the stage, or how I would jump up and down if we got to see some wild windmill action on Late Greats or I’m a Wheel or something.
When Pat and John showed up, I got all giggly (Pat looked like he hadn’t shaved in a couple days…it made him look a little older…ha…) My (poor, unsuspecting) Dad and I waved at him and said hi. He smiled at me. I saw all of the people near the alley looking towards the stage door. So I went over to investigate. “Who is it?” I asked. “It’s John, he’s unloading his stuff” Said one of the guys. “Oh,” I said as I walked back to my spot. “It’s just John.” (hahahahahaha)
So, anyway, after everyone re-arrived, (from going to see the baby, who is a total doll…just like his wonderful parents), we were all crowded to behind the alley. Kate and Graham got there, just to hang out, not to actually go to the show, and Kate handed me her cellphone. It was Natalie! Sooo cool. Nat and I chatted for a while and stuff (determining that I am actually Jewish by association to all of the Jewish women I know, thank you very much) and Charlos was on the phone too! Way cool! I was so hyped up, it was unbelievable.
And now for the Autumn Defense: It was just the two guys, no drums or anything. I dig their sound. Very snoozy. (personally, I’m a bigger fan of the full band Stirratts) So, yeah, I dug their tunes. One of the funniest moments of the night: John (or was it Pat???) said “And now we’re going to do a song by our favorite songwriters” and the guy next to my dad whispered “Jay Farrar!” highly juvenile, but very funny, nonetheless. My father also felt like egging him on. They got a stern talking to from Pat. Totally creepy moment: Pat was saying that there was way too much bass happening, and he said “I’ve got bass all on my face” and he was looking right at me. (I don’t know what he could possibly have been inferring…I don’t care how recombinant your DNA is, I don’t want it anywhere near me!!!!!!) But, yeah, they played a good set.
In between sets, Leah and I chatted in Spanish about the hoT roadies and that sort of thing. That was way cool. Stacy, however, shared a certain observation from the AD set that does not need repeating. I don’t know how she noticed it…I mean…Jeez, Stacy!
Jeff did a fine job, once again….and at an attempt to make everyone jealous once I again, I will post some things: (and now, a list..)
Radio King
Can’t Keep From Talking
Wait Up
Black Eye
Summerteeth (including our oooooooooh….aaaaaaaaaaaah…..s Jeff cracked up and lost his place)
ELT
Nothing’severgonnastandinmyway(again) (complete with clapping)
Candyfloss (she’s in the waaaaaaaay I’m in the waaaaaaaay….hopin’ she leaves that PUNK cuz….)
Henry and the H-Bombs
We’ve Been Had
So, there were two encores that ruled quite a bit. Yes.
Then road manager Caliente Jason brought out another rug…well, I screamed and I screamed and screamed. Because, after that, the roadie types started to carry out drums, guitars, amps, keyboards. Then Jeff returned and Glenn hit the stage and they played Laminated Cat (EEEEEEEE!!!!!!) and then Pat and Mike came on they played FAMILY GARDENER (never saw that coming!) And then John joined them. Jeff said he wanted to call Nels in California and asked if anyone had a phone. I held mine out towards the stage and he said “I’m not giving you Nels’s number!” Pat had a phone, but Nels didn’t pick up….apparently his phone had a similar fate to my family’s first one (stolen!). Ah, well.
So they played a few more songs, then an encore, that included ‘Political Science’ and ‘I Shall Be Released’ and ‘Hummingbird’ and ‘The Late Greats’ (that’s right, Pat, bring out the rawk!!!!) and ‘How to Fight Loneliness’. Not to mention a full band version of “John Wesley Harding” Way, way cool. There was some microphone make out time (meow) and then some Jeff-on-John hugging action at the end of the show.
Wow. I was about to pass out…There was another girl who dehydrated behind me. I was really close to a similar fate.
I found my other mom shortly after. She gave me a big hug and introduced me to her friend as her daughter. I have to send her an e-mail…
Wierdo observation: for the past couple weeks I’ve been convinced that some kind of bad karma would hit me during the shows. Well, it kind of did. I predicted that I would get my period at some point during the show. By Jeff’s second encore of the first night, I was right. Sorry boys, I hope I didn’t offend any of you with my icky girl talk. (I liked it better when I only had female readers…I could get away with more)
Now I need some serious sleep.
(sorry about the long entry, I need to do some html formatting that I can’t do at home…)
