So, as most of you may know...my brother Ray is in town this weekend. Yes, I know it's the weekend before finals, but, you know what? I don't really care! I know I'm gonna do fine. I'm gonna have to write 3 papers this week, but it'll be ok....I'll start tomorrow night and get done by Thursday (when the 3rd is due.)
Anyway... He got in a wee bit late on the train on Friday night... Steve and Katie and I met him. We spent the extra hour having singalongs and fucking with the drunks who walked by. I was so happy to see the kid, I knew we were gonna have a hell of a weekend.
We hung out in Laura's room until 2...partying (meaning eating lots of food) and getting a good buzz from good company. It was really fun, we had a great big group and we were all laughing and stuff. Ray and Steve played Nintendo, it was cute. I could barely sleep that night, I was so excited, and when I did sleep, I dreamt about assholes.
The drive there was fun, lots of good music and good company, playing the "I'm going to a picnic and I'm bringing" game. The time just flew by.
In St. Louie we browsed through shops and ate at the famous Blueberry Hill before spending 2 hours at the front of the line to get into the show. I bought t-shirts for me and Ray (mine is pink and has a picture on the front and the 20th aniversary thing on the back and is totally hawT...and Ray's is green and has 4 presidents on the front saying "TMBG" and Jimmy Carter on the back thinking "!" It's funny) At the door, they gave out foam fingers that said They Might Be Giants on them to the first 20 or so people. Our group got 2 of them. We used them to annoy Katie. Of course.
The opener was pretty good, as far as openers go. His name was Michael something...and he came on stage with a Ukelele (I can't spell, I know), and played a dozen short songs about the sad side of love...but with extremely clever and sometimes ironic lyrics. The audience loved him. He was the perfect opener, actually. He didn't overstay his welcome (as my dad always says) and he kept our attention, even interacting with us occassionally (for example...he played a song that he had written for a specific girl and wanted to know if we would have fallen for it...because she didn't....of course we all said we would have.)
When TMBG hit the stage, I flipped out. I screamed and jumped and didn't stop white girl dancing until the show was over. They played all of my favorites: Birdhouse, Isttanbul, New York City, Turn Around, Finger Tips (SERIOUSLY!! This kicked so much ass...I freaked out...and danced like a crazy person...it was so funny), Dr. Worm, Boss of Me, Why Does the Sun Shine, James K. Polk (they dropped confetti on us! Totally cool!), the one about the alphabet in countries (ZIMBABWE!!!!!) (To be perfectly honest, I felt like the world's biggest dork freaking out about songs about, like, educational stuff...but I loved it!), Experimental Film (They gave a shout out to StrongSad! LOL!!!!!!), Damn Good Times...as well as some songs from their first album, some stuff from an upcoming album, some of their podcast stuff (which I've now subscribed to...You guys should too! It's good stuff!), and Happy Birthday to Flans! He's 39 now...and they've been making music since 1982...so I guess that means they started in high school? The guys were frickin' hysterical too...their banter amongst each other was so funny, I was cracking up. Linnell kept looking at me during the show...and I just kept grinning at him...I think he might have smiled at me once or twice (hee...) (I *heart* him...although he's so anti social that none of his fans ever actually meet him.) In between songs they mentioned the riverboat gambling in St. Louis and I yelled "Casinoooo Queeeeeeeeen!!!!!1111" and half the band looked at me like "Crap, we have a Wilco fan in the audience." It was funny.
After the show we were all buzzing. My stomach was killing me but I continued to jump and run and sing and chatter. There was a huge ass crowd standing by the barriered bus. Out came Flans... We waited until the crowd sorta of subsided, then Ray and I snuck in through the side. I held out my novelty hand, and Ray his t-shirt...and I explained that it was his 16th and that he travelled all the way from Chicago...Flans wrote "Happy B-day Ray!" on the shirt and "Rosie! John *backwards F" on my hand. I then snuck in again for a hug, like a serious fangirl. After this, we went to Starbuck's and hit the road, listening to Eddie Izzard all the way home!!
Now, I'm tired. Really tired. Ray's on his way home, and I should be studying, but I'm not. I'll start my studying/paper writing tomorrow, hardcore.
