Even More Movies!

I'm on vacation right now and rather than writing on my WIP like I should be I'm watching movies!! I watched TWO today. I wasn't going to watch the second one but then I managed to jam a razor blade a considerable distance into my hand and the resultant blood and pain meant that I couldn't do anything but sit around watching a movie and eating ice cream for a couple of hours. I'm better now though, so no worries.

Our Idiot Brother I quite liked this movie. It's a gentle comedy centering around Paul Rudd, who is well-intentioned to an alarmingly oblivious degree. This is light fare with a good message. IMDB Summary A comedy centered on an idealist who barges into the lives of his three sisters.

Black Death - Sean Bean does what he does best here, namely stalk around looking broody and concerned in medieval garb. Oh, yeah, and there's gruesome plague deaths everywhere. Plus some demonic shenanigans. A well-done period piece that is not for the feint of heart. IMDB Summary:  Set during the time of the first outbreak of bubonic plague in England, a young monk is given the task of learning the truth about reports of people being brought back to life in a small village.

Winter's Bone - Jennifer Lawrence. This one struck a little close to home since my dad's family shares some of the same characteristics as the people in this insular Ozark community. It's a slow somewhat disturbing story about a tough girl put in a bad situation. I liked it, though it's not for everyone so read some other reviews before you decide to watch. IMDB Summary An unflinching Ozark Mountain girl hacks through dangerous social terrain as she hunts down her drug-dealing father while trying to keep her family intact.

The Botany of Desire - Documentary. I bought this DVD for my dad for Christmas and it came with a free copy on my Amazon cloud. A very interesting, well-done look at the effect of four plants on human history and society. Beautifully shot and engaging. IMDB Summary Michael Pollan, a professor of journalism and a student of food, presents the history of four plants, each of which found a way to make itself essential to humans, thus ensuring widespread propagation. Apples, for sweetness; tulips, for beauty; marijuana, for pleasure; and, potatoes, for sustenance. Each has a story of discovery and adaptation; each has a symbiotic relationship with human civilization. The film tells these stories and examines these relationships.
