Easy book

Overdue reading project review.

The Wand in the Word: Conversations with Writers of Fantasy by Leonard S. Marcus

This was an easy book - a much needed break after the previous one. >_> This volume contains a series of brief interviews with authors of Fantasy literature aimed at children and teens, including Susan Cooper, Brian Jacques, Diana Wynne Jones, and others. Fans will enjoy hearing stories from the younger days of these writers as well as tidbits of advice on writing and thoughts on the importance of fantasy stories.

This is a fairly encouraging book for aspiring writers, as one thing that is made apparent through the course of the interviews is that there really isn't one "right way" to work when you're a writer. Some authors plan out their stories from beginning to end, others simply let their writing take them where it will. Most do a lot of editing. But each interviewee definitely has their own take on their work and their own process for creativity.

The main points that most of the authors make are this: if you want to write well, do a lot of reading and practice writing every day.

Good advice!
