The performance by the Toronto Dance Theatre last night was really good. It was modern interpretive dance which neither of us had ever experienced. I can't say it will ever be my favourite thing but it was interesting. The theme was a piano piece called Rivers so I kept that in my head and tried to see aspects of water in the dance pieces. Turns out it wasn't necessarily that the theme was carried through the whole hour. The dancers in one piece near the end were flipping their hands about kind of fluttery. I thought, fish. Like fish flipping around in the water. Turns out the choreography was inspired by the pianists  hands. I guess fish wasn't the intention at all! :) My favourite bit was a duo by a woman and a man that was very sensuous and felt more like a ballet pas de deux in some ways. Trying to keep with the theme, i thought later on it was kind of like swans at times. I don't think that's what its intention was either !

Anyway, the daughter of the woman that had set this up met us after the performance. It was a bit late because there had been a question/answer thing after the performance with the choreographer and the performers. We didn't know that so we were waiting outside for awhile wondering where she was. Anyway she came out, we drove her back to her hotel and went for a coffee in the restaurant in the hotel for a chat. She was really nice. Meeting complete strangers yet she was entirely comfortable, friendly and bubbly. I think she was in her late 20s and has been dancing for awhile. Her confidence showed. She was the one in the duo dance that I liked. We did ask a bit about the dancing but we didn't get into a lot of detail. She did tell us about the pianist inspired bit and thought my idea of swans was interesting, unusual :) Anyway I did like that one the best so that's all that matters. Interpretive can also mean your own interpretation i think.

The set was stark. A white curtain and white flooring out front. They changed the lighting and used that as well. Sometimes it was almost dark, perhaps implying it was a night time "river" i don't know. The dancers then wore very light coloured clothing. Sometimes the shadows on the curtain were mesmerizing.

The dancers were all very good, very supple and flexible and strong, there were five men and five women in the group. The piano piece was ok too. Tick off my first "new" thing for the year!

I stayed over at Mom's though still had to stop at my apartment to get a nightgown, toothbrush etc as i had left my bag of similar under my desk at work. I went to Mom's straight from work, see. I still would have to take her home so there was no point in coming back into town, thus the sleepover. Got a few groceries today on the way back here, forgetting one or two things i would have needed to make what I had planned. I'll just pick them up later or wait until next weekend.
