Dear Yuletide Author

Dear Author,

First, let me apologize for taking so long to write to you. It’s only a week into November and I, don’t know about you, but I’m already crazypants.

Second, let me tell me how awesome you already are! Yuletide is a wonderful, mad challenge. And if you’re doing NaNoWriMo as well...sainthood! I think I’ll nominate you for it! You’re taking time out of your busy schedule to give a perfect strange a hand-made gift. Whatever you write, whatever you write, I am already so grateful and appreciative that you’ve taken on the challenge. I don’t think you’re fantastic, I know you are. Whatever pressure you’re feeling, you can take making me happy off the list. I’m already thrilled!

Onto the stories!

So things I’m NOT into:
-Slash
-Smut
-Incest
-Deathfic (although I’ll take a good dark-fic)

Things I am into:
-Pretty much everything else :)
-I love gen! If I’ve given you something that looks like you’ll have to crew a ship that you don’t sail (coughcoughMansfieldParkcough), feel free to write gen-fic. Good gen is hard to find.
-Please do try to keep your fic with nothing higher than a PG-13/Teen rating.
-Keeping characters in-character even though they’re in out-of-character situations. Think a modern AU where all the personalities are the same even though the setting is different. We fell in love with these fandoms for a reason, right :)

Specifically:
Eureka! - I was so disappointed in Syfy when they canceled this show. That said, this might be the perfect opportunity to work on your gen-fic skills. I love Jack and I love Jo, and I love the partners/sibling relationship they have on the show. Maybe a day-in-the-life story? Maybe late-series Jack and Jo have a heart to heart about what it’s like, professionally, for Jo to jump from Deputy to Head of GE Security. We know she wanted to be Sheriff, but wanting a thing is different than having a thing. Or maybe you have the perfect idea for making these two a couple and you were just waiting for the right challenge. If that’s the case, go for it. It wouldn’t be the first time I joined a ship I wouldn’t have even considered before.

My Secret Identity - The last time I asked for this one, I asked for future-fic and I got it. Now I’m greedy and want some more! :D Mostly I’m fascinated by the idea of how Andrew might be able to keep his secret in this modern age of constant surveillance and privacy intrusion. If that doesn’t float your boat, no worries! I haven’t seen MSI since I was a kid. Pretty much anything you write would make me very happy.

Mansfield Park by Jane Austen - This...this is my favorite Jane Austen, bar none. I self-identified with Fanny a lot when I was growing up, possibly too much. I’d like a continuation story, please. I’ve also been interested in modern AUs, lately. If those don’t work for you, no problem! Write the story that’s working for you. One thing: no Fanny bashing. If you don’t like her, don’t agree with her morality, find her to be completely milquetoast and a doormat niece/cousin...I understand. I can see why you’d have that opinion. You’re probably also in the majority. But I love Fanny. No, really. Love the girl. So! If you don’t like Fanny but still really want to write for this one, just make Fanny a background character. I’m totally okay with that. She absolutely doesn’t have to be the focus of the story. Likewise the romance between Fanny and Edmund. Can’t write it? Don’t. Just make sure to include both characters so you fulfill the rules of Yuletide :)

Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge | The Wallflower (TV) - I shocked myself with how much I loved this show. If you go shippy, I’d love to see how Sunako manages to be with Kyohei even though he’s still a “bright” to her. If you go gen, then perhaps explore how Kyohei is repairing his relationship with mother. Or a look at Sunako/Kyohei through the eyes of the other guys.

Mercy Thompson Series by Patricia Briggs - Dear Author, if you haven’t already read this series....you’re not going to make it by Yuletide (lol) but you should start reading them anyway. They’re that good. I’ve requested Mercy and Ben because I’ve been fascinated by their relationship ever since the incident after Mercy’s assault. I really, really, really DO NOT want you to ship these two if possible. I can’t see it working realistically, even without Adam as a factor. Ben’s too messed up to make most any romantic relationship really work right now. Maybe a character study of the wolf he’s become from Mercy’s eyes? Maybe some of their banter-yness? Maybe she comes to his rescue, solidifying their surprising friendship? I just want to explore their relationship.

Thank you, thank you, thank you again, Dear Author. I can’t emphasize how happy I am with you, right now. Take a deep breath. You can do this. We can do this. Remember, I’m right here with you, wading through the craziness, too. You won’t let me down. You can’t, because I’m already thrilled! You’re already doing a great job. I can’t wait to see the final product :D

Vashti

dear author, yuletide
