A Nighttime Visit!
So. I'm chatting with my boyfriend on cam last night and I had to go to the outhouse. So when I returned and climbed back onto my bed, what do I see on the wall??
no shit!! A preying mantis! WOO!! And just that day, I had been perusing bugguide.net about mantids! I was lamenting the fact that I'd been here in Rock Creek for 2 months and still hadn't seen one. Now talk about the goddess providing or what!!!!

She's still immature, which is why she is so small :)

this one is my fave though :) She's totally checking out my Dune book :)
So I found a nice big jar for her, and put some sticks and plant material inside. I will be adding some rocks and soil for substrate, as well as a small dish with a bit of sponge and some water. I've got more than enough insects around to feed her voracious appetite. Just in the 3 hours from when I went to sleep to when I woke up, she gobbled up all 5 moths I had placed in her jar! Today I placed more, as well as some grasshoppers, and there is much carnage on the bottom of the jar now, leftovers of what she didn't want to eat, legs, wings, etc :)
I'm thrilled to have this girl as a friend for a little while! (I think she's a girl....I'm just calling her that for now until she's old enough for me to sex properly) Susan, the lady I'm staying with here in Rock Creek, wants to find a little tank she's got in the storage shed somewhere that we could use for her. She's just as thrilled by this find as I am. When my new friend had caught herself some lunch, I carefully carried her jar into the main house to show Susan and so we could share watching her wolf down her insectoid meal :)
Just figured out how to use the whole scrapbook thingy, was alot easier than I thought, so hopefully post some more pics soon :)
