a triangle is always a triangle. a triangle always knows its place &, whether clumsily or cleverly, fits it. a triangle always has three sides that touch tips to create three angles inside. the lengths of the sides can vary & thus change the sub-classification of the shape, but the triangular integrity is maintained.

equilateral: humble, logical, traditional, practical. dominating rooftops, the pyramids of egypt & yield signs, the equilateral consistently performs its duties flawlessly & compliantly. its three sides are always equal, its internal angles identical. the equilateral is simple & pleasing. it is clean & useful, never asks questions.

obtuse: eclectic, childish, distracted, whimsical. make three dots anywhere, anywhere!, & connect them through the air, across the page, under the covers to create an obtuse triangle. it gives purpose to boomerangs, the arm-armpit-ground moving whirling shape of a cartwheel, & the picture of a slide in a playground: ladder, top of slide, bottom of slide, ground. connected in the loose definition yet integral obtuse triangle.

& then, the isosceles. innovative, inspirational, elegant, idealistic. reaching, extending its limbs upwards, embracing the sky with warm confidence. transforming church spires & steeples, inspiring orange pylons free roaming the road, & giving the tips of pencils a point. ayyyy-eye-i-i-iscoceles, my unrequited love. looking beyond my grasp, reaching past my grubby, earthly grip. two sides of equal length, two angles of equal size: one measurement that accomodates to correlate & calculate & maintain the definition of your perfect shape. let me be your third, let me be your variable! let me linger in your lines, mingle with your angles & nestle in your perfectly parallel design. i can be flexible! i can be malleable! i will silently comply & be anything you want.

i was hesitant to mention it, but i feel it is impossible & irresponsible to neglect the darker side of the triangle. the bermuda triangle: notorious for luring & trapping ships & sailors. nobody can escape the boundaries of its three indistinguishable sides. then, there is the love triangle. sticky & malleable, always obtuse, the lines open & move to create new complicated variants of the triangle. this opening is dangerous & someone usually ends up hurt because this triangle is ephemeral. it inevitably ends up one single line connecting two people, leaving the third a lone dot on the page.

its angles & lengths vary infinitely according to its functions & whims, but it is always a triangle. three sides, three angles, one open breath, a space pregnant with potential but fenced in by the honourable triangle.

it is my birthday tomorrow! i will be twen-ty & i am not afraid like i thought i would be. i am growing up & into myself.
