“We’ve got to stop meeting like this,” I heard a voice say, and I turned around to see Rian standing behind me, flashing his brilliant smile.

“Oh shit, I know. All the other fast food junkies will start talking,” I said and he chuckled.

“They might,” he said. “Guess we should start eating some home cooked meals. Too bad I work all the time.”

“I’m on my way home from work myself,” I told him and he nodded. “I just stopped to pick up some food for me and my roommate.”

“That was nice of you,” he said and I made a face.

“Yeah. I called him and he gave me this long list of things to pick up. That’s the only thing that sucks about having a pregnant roommate,” I said, chuckling.

“At least he’s got you to look after him,” Rian said with a smile and I nodded.

“Can’t say as much for his sperm donor,” I said and he hummed.

“Oh, one of those?”

“Yeah,” I answered, rolling my eyes.

“So what are you going to do with the rest of your night off?” Rian asked as we moved closer to the counter.

“I really don’t think I’m doing anything,” I said, shrugging. “Probably hanging out with Jack. Watch movies or something while we eat our totally unhealthy dinner.”

“Oh, well I was wondering if you’d be interested in allowing me to take you out for some drinks tonight? I happen to be free from Starbucks hell tonight also,” he said, flashing me a dazzling smile.

“That’s a really nice offer, but I- I really don’t like to drink,” I told him, biting my lip. At least not anymore. “Plus I don’t really wanna leave Jack home by himself. He’s gone through a lot lately.”

“Oh, well that’s okay. We can get together another time. Maybe I can take you out to lunch again,” he said, but I did notice his white smile falter slightly.

“But you’re welcome to come hang out at my place, if you want. You can eat your unhealthy dinner with me tonight,” I said, giving a small smile.

“I don’t want to impose on your roommate,” he said and I shook my head.

“Jack won’t care. He’ll probably just fall asleep after he eats. His little tennis ball makes him sleepy,” I said with a smile.

He smiled back at me, looking up at the menu behind the counter. I took the opportunity to adjust my loose shirt. My baby bump was, surprisingly, not as big as Jack’s yet, but I knew it was there. I didn’t want Rian to see it just yet.

“So I’ll just follow you to yours after we get our food, alright?” Rian asked and I nodded.

“Sounds great,” I answered, smiling as I stepped up to the counter.

I unlocked the door, opening it and finding the room dark.

“Jack?” I called out, flipping on the lamp. “I have food!”

I got no answer and shrugged, moving to set the bags down on the coffee table.

“He must not be home,” I said, turning to face Rian. “Hopefully he hurries up. His food is gonna get cold.”

“Should you call him?” Rian asked and I shrugged.

“I can’t imagine he would have gone far. His car was outside,” I said, sitting down on the couch and opening up my bag, pulling my curly fries out. “He just better not bitch at me about his fries being cold.”

Rian laughed, sitting down next to me.

We sat in silence for about five minutes, eating and watching the television, before the front door swung open violently.

“Fucking asshole,” Jack mumbled, kicking his shoes off and dropping the basket of clothes in the middle of the floor. “Idiot, stupid fucking dickhead son of a bitch! Can’t believe you!”

He shrugged his hoodie off, throwing it onto the basket and itching his growing belly.

“Hey, Jack,” I said, and he turned to look at me, glancing over at Rian. “What’s up?”

“Fucking John!” he exclaimed, sitting down next to me and huffing before grabbing his food. “He cornered me in the laundry room while I was trying to load the washer, trying to talk to me. I almost punched him in the face, but if I had done that I probably would’ve knocked him out and then shoved him in the dryer too.”

I chuckled, patting his belly gently and watching him shove his face. I turned to look at Rian, who raised an eyebrow, and I smiled.

“Rian, this is my high-strung, hormone filled roommate, Jack,” I told him and Jack looked up, giving him a half smile. “Jack, this is Rian.”

“Nice to meet you, Jack,” Rian said.

“Nice to meet you too. I’m sorry about that. My ex-boyfriend’s a piece of fucking work,” Jack said and Rian chuckled.

“I get it,” he answered.

“Oh!” Jack said, standing up quickly, startling me. “I got you something, Lex.”

“What?” I asked, watching him go into the kitchen. I heard the freezer open and close, and a few minutes later Jack walked in holding an ice cream cake with a two candles, one in the shape of a two, the other in the shape of a three.

“You’re getting too old to put the accurate number of candles on. It would be a fire hazard,” he said and I rolled my eyes, chuckling.

“Jack, my birthday isn’t until tomorrow,” I said and he shrugged.

“I know, but Rian’s here right now, and he can celebrate with us,” he answered. “Where’s a lighter?”

“There’s one in the junk drawer in the kitchen,” I told him and he nodded, setting the cake down on the coffee table next to the empty bags before returning to the kitchen.

“So tomorrow’s your birthday?” Rian asked and I nodded. “Mine’s on Saturday.”

“Really? That’s cool,” I said, smiling. “Even more reason to have some of my birthday cake. We can share it.”

“That’s okay,” he said, laughing. “I’m sure I’ll get my own birthday cake. This is yours.”

“Okay,” I said, “but you are going to have a piece, right? I don’t think Jack will let you leave if you don’t.”

“Yeah, I will,” he said, chuckling. “I think your roommate may have a meltdown if I don’t. He seems pretty stressed at the moment.”

“Extremely,” I answered and he smiled.

“Okay, found it!” Jack exclaimed, coming back into the room and holding up the lighter. He lit the two candles, standing back and setting the lighter down. “Ready, Rian?”

I rolled my eyes and Rian shrugged, nodding.

“Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday, dear Alex. Happy birthday to you,” they sang and I laughed, shaking my head before leaning forward and playing out the candles.

“Yay!” Jack cheered, clapping and settling down in front of the table. He took the candles off of the cake, setting them down and cutting a piece for me. “Here, birthday boy.”

“Thank you, Jack,” I said, chuckling as I took the plate from him.

He handed one to Rian, earning a second thanks.

I took a bite, having to stop myself from moaning. The mixture of ice cream and cake was like heaven on my tongue.

“Mmm,” Jack hummed. “This is like sex on a fork.”

“That sounds painful,” I said, hearing him giggle.

“You don’t like being stabbed in the asshole with a fork?” he questioned and I shook my head.

“Not usually my thing,” I said and he chuckled.

“Good to know. You got that, Rian?” Jack asked and I choked on my cake.

“Jack!” I exclaimed and Rian laughed.

“I’ll keep that in mind,” Rian said, smirking cheekily at me.

Jack rubbed his belly as he took another bite, smiling.

“This is ice cream, baby. You’ll find out it’s the best thing in life and I’m going to bribe you with when you’re older,” he said and I chuckled, nonchalantly resting my hand on my own baby bump.

He finished off his cake, picking the knife up to cut another piece when there was a knock on the door.

“Are you expecting someone?” he asked, looking up at me.

“No,” I said, shaking my head before the knocking started up again.

“Then who the fuck is that?” Jack said, standing up and hearing the knock again, this time a little harder.

“Jack!” a voice yelled, and he stopped, glaring at the door.

“Are you fucking kidding me?” he said, shaking his head. “Why is he here?!”

“I don’t know. Don’t answer it,” I said, and he snorted.

“No worries there,” he said, turning around to go back to the couch.

“Jack! Open the door! I w-wanna talk to you!”

“He’s drunk,” Jack huffed, rolling his eyes.

“Seriously?” I said, glancing at the door. Rian looked at me, obviously uncomfortable.

“I feel like I should go...” he said and I shook my head.

“I’m sorry you have to witness this,” I told him, “but we have to wait until John leaves or else you won’t be able to get out.”

“It’s alright,” he said, “I just feel like I’m barging in on personal business.”

“John likes to air our dirty laundry for the world to fucking see. It’s nothing personal,” Jack said, standing up and walking towards the kitchen.

John knocked again. “Jack! I need to fucking talk to you! Open the door!”

“No!” Jack screamed, turning and facing the door. “Go the fuck away, John!”

He banged on the door again and Jack glared.

“I am not fucking letting you in! Go away before I call the cops for harassment!” Jack yelled.

“I’m not leaving until you talk to me, Jack!”

“I’m gonna stab him in the fucking face!” Jack said, tugging on his hair. “Fuck, I have to pee!”

He walked away towards the bathroom and I heard another bang on the door.

“Yeah, I’m really sorry,” I told Rian and he chuckled, scootching closer to me.

“Maybe now would be a good time to give me a tour of the apartment,” he said and I nodded.

“Follow me,” I said, standing up and leading him away from the living room.
