It seems like a very long time ago. It *was* a very long time ago. Three years isn't a short period of time by any measure. Certainly not in lives as driven as ours. And as a friend half-jokingly pointed out, life stretches out a bit, when you work as many hours in a single year, as most people work in two. :-)

The department holiday party was in full swing, complete with white-gloved waiters ferrying drinks, hobnobbing faculty and residents, and a pianist in the corner playing live music.
