Last night, I drove down to Oceanside to see my old college roommate
zakdos and his gf, who's there visiting her sister. I waited to leave until 7, so it only took 2 hours instead of 10. Along the way, I stopped at a Stater Bros. to pick up some Pop'ems, our dessert of choice from Bear Mart at WashU, and Diet Code Red Mountain Dew, which I found from
this awesome site. Brian and Missy had eaten dinner already, at this Mexican place called Alberto's, but took me there since I hadn't eaten yet. I wanted my favorite Mexican dish, a chicken chimichanga (yeah, I know it's not really Mexican, but still great), but they also had carne asada fries. I keep hearing from San Diegans (is that what you call them?) that the latter are amazing. So I had to get both. And a horchata. Brian got an horchata too, while Missy went over to the Coldstone and got a smoothie. Which was apparently just some berries and ice. The horchata was a little weak--I'm not sure if they didn't make it strong enough or just added too much ice. I did not realize how big the dishes that I got were. Carne asada fries are pretty sweet, but not a whole order of them. And I should have asked for the chimichanga without beans. Why do people like refried beans? Disgusting. Except for the beans at Bamboo.
We dropped Missy off, and headed to SD. It was 11:15, and supposed to take 52 minutes to get to the Gaslamp Quarter, but I thought we'd try to make it to the Ghirardelli ice cream shop by closing time, midnight. Alas, we were 2 minutes late. We walked in, but they told us it was closed:( So we wandered around, trying to find bars with decent beer selections. All of those were closed. So we ended up at Double Deuce, this bar with a mechanical bull. I got a Shiner Bock, Brian got a Sam Adams. Something was not quite right with them. A few guys were thrown off the bull, a couple girls as well, though more provocatively. We walked around some more, went to another bar and had better beer (not better types, but nothing was wrong this time). And drove back to Oceanside, eating Pop'ems.
I dropped Brian off and started back at 2:15 am. I was getting kind of tired, so I opened one of the cans of Mountain Dew. I had gotten to the OC, when I noticed a car behind me with a weird blue light. I slowed down a bit, and the car turned on its police lights. The cop pulled me over at a gas station and did the whole waving a pen thing to make me follow it with my eyes to show I wasn't drunk. He said I was weaving and going 78 (in a 65). But I guess let me off. So I set my cruise control for 65 for the rest of the way, and got home at 4 am. Got to lab at 9:30, and am ready to sleep through my lab safety class at 12:45.
