For the past week or so, I’ve been going through my old cassette tapes of my music I did back in the 80’s. Listening to these tapes I was struck by how little my voice has changed (I guess that could be a bad thing) and by for lack of a better word, how little my musical vision has changed (I guess that too could be a bad thing). I’ve always been influenced by a ton of music and I’ve always wanted to make music in a variety of styles. On these tapes, I was coming across punk rock songs, followed by Prince like instrumentals, followed by brit-pop type songs, followed by country weepers (this is just side one). This hodge podge approach always made it hard for me to establish any kind of unified musical identity and made anyone remotely related to the music industry take little more than a passing interest in my band.(“these are great songs, but there all over the map, we can’t sell this, are you punk band or a funk band etc…).
So I resigned myself to just doing my music and work on improving my production style. Over the years I’ve had little minor successes with my music and music that I’ve produced for others. It’s certainly been a fun trip and I've learned so much. But now, I think there's a change in the air and I can’t wait to get started on my next set of songs. See, I think with the advent of the I-Pod, people are starting to listen to music differently. You can put it in shuttle and it’s really cool because you can hear these really weird segues between different kinds of music. It’s fun and it’s not about albums or a group sound, it’s about tunes. I think this shift really plays into my music making and production style. I’m excited really about the possibilities and I can’t wait to see how things shake out.
