I went to see Tales From Earthsea yesterday morning. It was like they took Ursula le Guinn's four books and put them in a blender for a two-second pulse, then made up a story of the small chunks that survived.
Despite the scant and twisted resemblance to the books, it is a good movie, with a solid plot and lots of the prettypretty that Studio Ghibli is so good at. I really like the design of their dragons and the way they trail sparks when they fly.
Today is the last chance to see it in Melbourne for a while. The Astor will be showing it in October and I will probably pop along to see it then. It's a double with Howl's Moving Castle. Should be good.
For the rest of the day I wandered around the city. I have noticed for a while now that my poor little Mambo bag which has sereved 4-5 faithful years of daily use and abuse has been recently fraying at all the edges and developing worn holes, not to mention being massively faded and grubby. So while I was out, I bought a new bag. It's a purple leather colorado bag and I only hope it will wear as well as the poor little Mambo one did. It is slightly larger but not big enough to lose things in.
The Mambo bag will be buried under a shelf, or at the top of a cupboard or something like that. I can't bare to throw it out just yet.
I called my sister last night while I was watching the news. It's not often Maitland makes it onto National broadcasts. It seems the danger is past now. The flooding is subsiding and the levvy banks along the river held. All my relatives live in East Maitland which is about 5-10 metres higher than Maitland and the flood plains, so they were never really in danger. My orchids are still all alive, and I spoke to my Aunt who drove by my horse on Friday after the main storm and she said Williamtown had just regular flooding - the sort it gets any time it rains. So Jay should be fine.
I'll get to see the aftermath next weekend when I fly back home.
I should contact Piggs Peake to make sure the party is still on.
