I've been ignoring my garden

Jul 16, 2013 12:30

Til today. At 9 am, it was not too hot to plant. Made a bit less mess than usual, but have one foot that is black. I'm never going to be Martha Stewart, doing stuff looking all neat and tidy. Managed to find some not quite dead annuals at the shops yesterday. As I'm two months late in planting, the only good thing is that they were cheap. Baskets on riverside deck are planted. I'll only be planting on two large pots on the rear deck. Overgrown herb garden and what was meant to be new herb/vegetable patch will have to wait til fall for work to be done/

Sloth is my nature this year it seems. What with dental work, daily headache and Sophie, I've been put so behind on my usual activities. Then I lost most of last weekend, spent Saturday dealing with a family matter and Sunday afternoon was spent mired in a small pond. Then Monday am, dear brother helped me to clean the car out.

However, the hard work I put in on the perennial garden is paying off. Some weeds were pulled but I only spent about 15 minutes on it over the last few weeks - total. There are more weeds, but the perennials are masking them. It looks good. A voracious rose, New Dawn, has been planted at the corner of the Pergola. According to it's reviews it should cover the Pergola in a week or two (slight exaggeration). Ivy planted last year looks good, but it will not start to do much til next year. Both clematis planted last year died. The older one still needs pruning - should have been done in the spring, however it's blooming brilliantly.

We are in the midst of an extreme - for us heat wave. Humidex reading of 100 forecast each day this week. I'm off today, but will be working for the rest of the week. A/C in car works, however, I have to lock the car and shut the windows at each house due to confidentiality issues, car then becomes an oven.

To keep my airconditioning bills lower, I've put up a make-shift blind in my sewing room/study. East facing window + sun = very hot room. Paper has been taped over stained glass bathroom window facing that way as well, ditto south facing windows. As no one could possibly see into these windows, they won't have permanent window coverings. I love the full light I  get in the bathroom all year round. The three great room windows installed  coughyearscough ago, are still uncovered. As they face full west, they are a great source of heat gain at the end of the day. Materials and notions are in the house to make blinds. As that hasn't happened yet a new set of paper blinds are taped to windows. Oh the shame!

What little I've done this am has now prostrated me with headache. Tablets taken in the hopes that I can do more of the things I want/need to do today.

garden, real life, home, weather
