Thanks for posting this, I am seriously contemplating buying a scooter as well and I would like to hear what Tucsonans think about the heat (as that is my main issue as well)

I did find some site that compared gas mileage in different vehicles and -yeah- the money I would save not lugging my massive 4Runner around would actually pay the scooter payments. Liability insurance is dirt cheap for scooters (about $100 a year) and you can get them repaired locally at GoScoot Over, but they said new scooters generally don't need repair for a long time. The folks over there are really nice and they will let you test ride some scooters too ^_^ I think I want a Buddy and it has a two year warranty and if you buy from that store they give you discounted repairs when the warranty is up.

I seem to be seeing a lot more scooters and motorcycles around lately. I hope more people will switch over. :)

Gah I want my scooter now! (I have been holding on to my massive vehicle until I move in July...it is good for moving if nothing else :P)

Zimfusion's boyfriend here. I did the math for her 4runner, and she was looking to save like $150/month on gas based on about 1000 miles/month. THis isn't including the money you would save on insurance if you got rid of your car.

You'll be surprised how easy it is to live without a car once you get rid of it. I used to find it unimaginable to be without mine, but four years later, I can barely remember having one. I ride a bike, but I suspect you'll have a similar experience with your scooter.

it will probably be an even easier transition with a scooter, ebcause you can actually keep up with traffic. I only have a bike right now too, but I would love to get a scooter so that I can extend my range.

I get around year-round in Tucson on two-wheels. My main around town bike is a 400cc bike with a 2.5 gallon gas tank. I get about 50 mpg around town. Sticker shock at the pump is mediated by the small tank. Even now, I'm never putting in more than $10 worth. (I borrowed a friend's 12 mpg van to do a few errands recently and felt the pain of the van and car crowd at the pump. No thanks ( ... )

I have nothing to offer by way of scooter experience however I heartily second the Timbuk2 Bags. They keep things dry, are customizable, easy on your back and are pure awesome.

If you get a Stella I will lament in jealousy.

(PS I think you can handle a scooter. You're used to get around without a car (or with one car) and for very inclement weather, you and Steph could probably work something out.)

I commuted solely by bicycle for quite some time and even now that I have a car (mostly to appease my worrying mother who lives on the east coast), I prefer to bike. I find monsoons to be more of a deterrent than the heat, and during monsoons I find myself seeking the cover and visibility of my car or a bus. Monsoons are very brief compared with the summer or the rest of the year, though. I say go for it- better for your wallet and the environment. Whee!
