Dawn looked glumly out the window. Whoever said it never rained but it poured had clearly spent some time in Vegas. The rain coming down was nothing short of torrential. So much for her idea to take Greg out for a picnic. Stupid weather.

It wasn’t as if she got much time with her boyfriend, given how much overtime he’d been clocking lately. Oh, and the small matter of both her sisters having threatened him that they’d found out that she and Greg were together. Buffy had been ok with it, really. Catherine hadn’t. She’d gone ballistic, and called in backup- Nick and Sara had joined in the general threatening, and Nick at least had said some things that had Greg pretty upset. If Nick made one more crack about pedophiles, she was going to gut him. No matter how much Buffy liked him.
She was surprised when the doorbell rang. She opened the door to find a dripping Greg.

“What are you doing?”

“I figured you had your heart set on a picnic, and it seemed a shame to waste the afternoon…”

Greg held up a picnic basket.

Dawn grinned. She really had the best boyfriend in the world.

Dawn stumbled onto the human resistance on her third week in Delphi. She’d been starting to wonder if anyone was left alive. Well, other than the machines.

She’d found herself a gun the first day. After she’d seen the first giant metal killing machine, she’d decided that the house rules she was used to about guns not making anything better did not apply here. Guns were great. Guns were wonderful. So were radiation meds, unspoiled food, and safe places to sleep.

She’d also seen the human looking machines. The first pair might have fooled her if they hadn’t been walking around with the metal ones. So when she met the resistance, she was suspicious. The feeling was mutual.

“Prove you’re human!”

“How the hell am I supposed to do that? The fake ones bleed just like the real ones!”

That was when Dawn’s brain kicked into gear. The machines wouldn’t have bothered with the whole standoff thing. They weren’t ever confused by whether or not they were dealing with each other.

“You’re seriously human? Thank the Goddess for small favors.”

Any reply the resistance leader might have made was cut off by Dawn hugging him hard enough to wind him.
