For those of you who haven't heard, it looks like I've found a job in Japan. I'll be team-teaching with a Japanese teacher at a public junior high/high school. I talked to the guy I'll be replacing, and it seems like a really nice setup. I met with the principal and another Japanese teacher at the school, and they seem very nice. What really made the decision for me however was the woman who introduced me to the position in the first place.
Although I sent out tons of e-mails in my job search (indirectly through job search websites, or directly through the e-mail link on the company website whenever possible), she was the only person to actually respond without a form letter. And she didn't even have a job for me at the time! She has her own English conversation school, and she later told me that she had wanted to hire a female teacher, but there were too few applicants. She apparently got my resume just after hiring a male for her own school.
Thankfully, she was nice enough to think of me when she found out the principal of a neighboring school needed an ALT. Seems like the public school also wanted a female teacher because the student body is mainly female. I never thought being a girl could be such an advantage here.
The job seems to be located in a very nice city, and comes with a stellar support system as well. I'm really excited to get started. The only problem is, it's in Shizuoka! Although my contact is arranging everything from visa status to housing for me, I'm still a bit reluctant to leave this area. The only comfort is that the route by train is simple, if time-consuming, and I now have a job and should be able to stay in the country for another year at least.
