Food and fancies

Oh man, this morning after a night of insomnia I dreamed I was at a giant donut bar where you hand an attendant your pick of flour (I think I read 'coconut flour' on one of the bags) and they make you dough in a little show and fry it, you get pick of frosting/glazes from another attendant (I saw 'strawberry mango') and then you go around the jar filled store putting candy and cereal and stuff on it! Only drawback was I was just holding it in my hand, it'd be better in a tiny pizza box :)

I didn't get to eat it, so it's another one of my 'preparing to do something awesome but never actually doing it' dreams. Perpetually packing for that sweet, sweet vacation...

---------------------

I'm having kind of a shitty week because my PC keeps freezing up and can't figure out why. I can't go through doll pics or delete anything (or back stuff up on to my ex drive). :( We updated drivers, replaced RAM, ran diagnostics...I really don't want to reformat, ugh. I feel so naked.

But in good news, this weekend I had the Hong Kong style pan fried noodles to redeem my life. R took me on a 'make me feel better' date (indluding a candy run <3) and we finally decided to try Martin Yan's restaurant in Westfield mall after a couple years, I think, of pondering it.

I have a soft spot in my heart for M. Yan ever since watching him on tv with my c-mom when I was little ("3 pepper steak! A pepper pepper PEPPER steak!") and having him call me pretty and giving me an autograph in high school. I was a little afraid because the place was in a mall and I didn't want it to be awful overpriced brand-oriented food so we were always like eh, maybe later. So wrong...these pan fried noodles gave me hope again.

For a little background, I fucking LOVE H.K. pan fried noodles. In theory. Sometimes on my way home from school when I was little, if I knew no one was going to be home till late I'd secretly buy an order and eat it in my room while reading, to assuage my latchkey loneliness (how I wasn't fat as a kid is really beyond me). But as I grew older and my palette developed I started to get discouraged, as so many restaurants just farted out quick n' dirty versions with overly salty, flavorless gristly chicken/beef, limp, slimy bok choy with little bugs occasionally still in it, gravy that was basically just msg and cornstarch...sometimes even the noodles tasted rancid. Bitterly disappointed over and over, I became jaded, my soul furrowed...

But the dish I had at M.Y. China! Zero gristle to the chicken and actual yummy flavor! juicy, crunchy bok choy, a brothy sauce that had me smacking my lips! Shiitakes like little fungusy pillows of divinity! Ach, I'm reliving that bliss even as I type this. I'm almost afraid to go back out of fear that it was a fluke or I was just feeling especially high that day :P And that wasn't even it - the beef rolls were amazing...I was counting the bites till they were no more...and that crysanthemum infused vodka cocktail (and the crazy refreshing crysanthemum granita with the lychee panna cotta, like bathing in a cool spring) made me recall buying my single Vitasoy crysanthemum tea in high school and remembering when my c-mom would take me to family dim sum and they'd serve crysanthemum tea with the flowers in it. A tear rolls down my cheek ;_; as I ride a lusty steed composed of crispy noodles into the warm, nostalgic sunset. Martin Yan, I love youuuuu...

...Why no I haven't been influenced by Shokugeki no Souma, why do you ask? :P
(Everything I said was true though XD)

In other news, went to the GG Park Comedy Day festival, but it was painfully hot even with my parasol and almost no one was funny :( (I missed Tom Ammiano's set...W. Kamau Bell got sensitive about a heckler and basically shut down his whole set...George Wallace was like the only funny act I remember and it was like 5 minutes long :P) It was amusing how nearly everyone did the same topical sf stuff (expensive as hell, we're all getting kicked out tomorrow, butthole techies, wtf Donald Trump and the RNC debate, could it BE any hotter today?) though :P

Saw The Visit and actually had a lot of fun (probably helped that there were some very emote-y people in the theater audience). I thought it was going to end up a commentary on just the awkward horrors of old age for a bit there (and I would've applauded that, it's not something touched on too much in pop culture). It went a little bit different, and a bit silly, but I laughed a lot and squealed a bit with everyone else and enjoyed myself :P Really not that bad an offering (some nice distinct details, fairly topical ('youtube kids'), some good shooting and great performances, hilarious at times), so it makes me feel bad for poor disgraced M. Night...or it did until R explained the plot of Signs to me XD

Also bought Stasis on GOG because it looked so awesome and cutely bleak, even though I'd never heard of it/seen gameplay. So unlike me! I hope it's fun!

Also started watching Narcos on Netflix. CAPTIVATING. I can't even really multitask while watching it, and THAT'S saying something!
