Y'know what I love about Halloween? It's one of the very few times of year in this country where we feel a cultural compulsion to act differently from the way we normally do (doesn't hurt that there's some appreciation of a dark aesthetic/turning our face towards the inevitable, however consumption-targeted the approach may be), in a way that isn't religiously driven (may once have been, but no longer) and done for reward or to avoid punishment. It's no Holi festival exactly (man that sounds like fun), but it's us coming up out of the melange because we choose to. It's like a very subtle reminder of the 'Dream of a Thousand Cats' theory I love to think about - that if enough of us decided that things were going to be a certain way and just acted as if, then for us, that would be the actual way it was. We could be living in a (magic-void, I suppose) fantasy world right now if we all decided to act like we were. The problem only lies in the consensus and interpretation.

That's why I'm pretty sad that as of 5PM I have no plans to participate tonight ;_; a combination of being broke and in my thirties and R having work tomorrow and there just not being a lot of public stuff going on that's not all expensive (I could go to a nice skanky massive, I suppose, or go get drunk/walk about downtown, but again Thursday and it's not only me I gotta think about, and personally, I don't like to make this holiday about getting wasted). Our apartment is in the back of the building so trick-or-treaters are impossible and no one we know happens to be doing anything either. Friday there's supposed to be a zombie warehouse thing happening somewhere sort of close, but I think it's a little pricey, and also there's a Daft Punk appreciation night at the Mezzanine; I hope I can maybe catch one of those things.

For Saturday one of R's clients (or contractors he works with?) invited us and R's family to a big 50th bday party with a jillion people and a band and everything, so as long as I don't freak out that might be fun (don't think I've ever met him, but presumably if he's R's client he's got a nice place), and Sunday I'll probably just bite the bullet and go see Ender's Game. The commercials make it look sort of like what happened to Watchmen (visually awesome, but with the heart ripped out). It already looks like they took out the big "twist" of the story, and all the dialogue seems to have been changed to basic action-movie chatter, but I'll try not to prejudge. That book was my favorite when I was 11, and even though I've been chagrined and saddened to be exposed to OSC's personal opinions on a lot of things over recent years, and I've become uninterested in his newer work, he was a great storyteller and I've really liked a lot of his books from before, so good for him I guess. We'll see.

Oh, last week I saw the 3D Metallica movie :P I think some of their songs are extremely well-written and nicely executed so despite never really 'fangirling' per se, and despite the Napster fallout I've retained a favorable attitude towards them over the years (also love to tease R mercilessly about how he and Robert Trujillo are like twins). The movie was kind of melodramatic (I can just picture a brainstorming session with the band as a bunch of metalhead teenagers going "Ooh, riots! Exploding stuff! a spooky puppet and a badass evil horseman! Put that in!"), but well shot and pretty entertaining. I thought it was funny how Lars keeps pulling faces that completely distracted me away from his drumming (I love to watch the drummers during concerts usually, the coordination can be mesmerizing - but not this time), but yeah. I feel an opportunity to create something very penetrating and sophisticated may have been missed, but as a concert for them with some cool visuals it worked. Good for them. Also, the mushroom fries at Sauce are the tits.
