I agree with you on more understated unless in the case someone nearly died, such as when Bridge was kidnapped and nearly crushed, or when Jack was briefly assumed dead on the meteor mission. Even if it's just a quick 'Oh, thank god you're alive!' moment, I would honestly be amazed if there wasn't hugging in that instance. I wouldn't be expecting like, gushing and tears, but *some* sign of affection wouldn't be so out of place.

By 'focused attacks', I mean character-specific episodes. Marah's trick on Dustin in the Beevil episode. Zhane nearly dying because his powers had shorted. Um ... -Tries to think of more- Carter's Groundhog Day episode, even. Basically, when a member of the team has gone through something particularly harsh, and is just generally in need of extra attention. Again, near-death experiences fit well here, but I'm not necessarily excluding the emotional traumas either, depending on who's involved. Dustin, for example, would totally have wanted a hug after Marah tricked him; he was almost in tears when he realized what she'd done.
