Per episode 17:

This is another episode that I don't find very exceptional, being mainly another bout of Sakura going behind her classmates' backs to capture a card. Did this get picked up by the Nelvajerks? It suits their basic requirements, but I just can't remember watching it in English.

(typing as I watch)

Right away there's a plot hole: Kero whines that he can't turn on the AC because no one in the family is home, but Touya and Yukito are right next door studying. Somebody IS home, and aren't they hot too?

Yamazaki's been around for a few episodes now, but this is the first time that we see Chiharu interact with him, and the fact raised that they are a couple. Yamazaki's just not as much fun when Chiharu isn't around to smack him, if you ask me.

I have to raise my eyebrows at the plan for the elementary students to haul in their own dinner out of the ocean. What if there weren't any fish that day? Did Terada pack Lunchables as a backup? And it's a good thing that all these ten year olds know how to gut and grill fresh fish.

Yes, Terada-sensei, something happened. You opened the door and walked into a cabin full of girls without knocking! Could the school spare no female chaperones for this trip?

Li says he felt a presence different from a Clow Card in the cave, though in fact it did turn out to be a Clow Card. Why would it feel different? Maybe the cave really does have a ghost, just like in my Jump card theory, but the Clow Card took up temporary co-residence.

This bit with them talking on the beach at night is indeed very nice. It's like a frozen winter slowly starting to thaw, when you first see the icicles start to drip. Obviously Li sees that too, which is why he gets so flustered and runs away. All this pacing would make total sense if we hadn't seen what we did at the zoo episode.

Aha, so they did bring a female teacher along for this trip. Any particular reason she's not the one checking on the girls in the middle of the night?

I raise my eyebrows again at the idea that Terada is jumping out to frighten the kids in a ghost costume. There's nothing wrong with playing a ghost prank, but these kids are all carrying live candles. What if someone got burned?

When Tomoyo disappeared, the candle got left behind. But we don't see any other candles dropped by other disappeared students.

This is a good moment between Li and Sakura. Instead of just telling her she's a hopeless idiot, he coaches her into calming down and feeling for the card's presence. And she's obviously totally panicked at the thought of losing him, when he starts to fade. Of course she doesn't want to be left alone, no matter what, but she was really relying on his solid support. It was fair of her to offer it to him afterwards.

Nobody in the class can remember an entire evening, and nobody seems to think that's worth investigating in the least? This really is Sunnydale.

Li informs her that he hasn't approved of her yet, but he has gotten beyond hating her existence. I think seeing her so tearful and panicky out int he middle of the night changed his perspective of her. Not 'pity' exactly, but more like seeing your rival grappling with their fears and anxieties, and you realize that person is human after all, and just out trying to do their best like you are. Somewhere in there, Sakura slides out of being an 'obstacle' in his path to collect the Cards, and becomes just a person that he can work with and even rely on a little.

I brought this up when we were watching, and D pointed out that they don't always have central air like we do in the US, so each room has its own A/C unit. It's not that no one's home, it's that Kero can't turn on the A/C unit in Sakura's room because she's supposed to be gone.

Ha, I noticed that, too. I used to like Terada back in the day, but he does come across as a bit of a creeper.

I don't get the whole "test of courage" in general. I guess it's another Japanese thing, because I see it in anime/manga a lot, and... I don't know what the point is, especially as a school activity. I guess it's the equivalent of sitting around a campfire telling ghost stories or singing songs like we did in girl scouts. Something to do when you're camping.

Kero can't turn on the A/C unit in Sakura's room because she's supposed to be gone. - That's a pretty sensible theory, if someone can point out to me where her a/c unit is. I guess it's not built into the windows like here in the US, because I'm sure I don't see one. Still, I guess it's the best thing we have to go on.

When I've seen them in other series, they're usually over doors. Of course I didn't notice one here or not; I just took his word for it. Now I'm going to be looking....
