so that was an election. what is wrong with us! repubs took the white house and flipped the senate but it's anyone's guess who will get the house. (unless more results have been called and i haven't seen them yet.) on the one hand, delaware sent the first ever out trans rep to dc (sarah mcbride, and good for her), and new jersey elected the

I'm disappointed too, but I want to comment on your sentence about the demographics. The exit polls suggest that although Hispanic men voted in majority for Trump, black men absolutely did not, so I don't think you can put them in the same bucket. And when it comes to people who identify as having Hispanic or Latino heritage, that's a pretty broad group that includes plenty of white people. Given that white people (both men and women) voted in majority for Trump, the swing was unfortunate but not especially surprising. 538 have been talking about it since 2020 when Florida first tipped.
Another data point from my personal experience is the tech industry, where Asians are over-represented in the west (both East Asians and South Asians) and plenty of those guys are exactly the kind of anti-woke type who would vote for Elon's man. Some dipshit over here brought the election up with me at work yesterday and said "well it's a terrible result for us here in Taiwan, but if I lived in America I would've voted for Trump too because San Francisco is a hell-hole", and then he went on to talk about all the murders and rapes black people and illegal aliens on the other side of the world are committing: "it's a warzone, even [a Taiwanese American team member of ours living in SF] got robbed!" I went off at him but could not change his mind. I've had similar conversations with several colleagues, both here and in China. Their US migrant family members are almost universally conservative, and if they're first-gen then they probably also brought with them the racial prejudices that go unremarked-upon over here. Does Trump care about Asian people? Of course not. But I'm sure he thinks they make great doctors or scientists and he'd be glad to have "the good ones" on his team. I think the people who vote for him very much believe they are "the good ones".
There was a bit on Daily Show last week where John Leguizamo went undercover and interviewed a panel of Hispanic Trump voters about why they were doing it... And even after he showed them all the racist shit Trump says, when he revealed himself and said his bit, they all had a good laugh... and then said they were still voting Trump anyway. I saw so many of my colleagues right there in that segment. They really don't care about any broader issues of social justice as long as they personally get more money in the pocket, or even just a compelling fairytale of riches to come.
