angry but also disappointed

so that was an election. what is wrong with us! repubs took the white house and flipped the senate but it's anyone's guess who will get the house. (unless more results have been called and i haven't seen them yet.) on the one hand, delaware sent the first ever out trans rep to dc (sarah mcbride, and good for her), and new jersey elected the first korean american senator (andy kim, whose parents are immigrants), and a bunch of states voted to put the right to an abortion in the constitution, and kentucky voted not to give public money to students attending private schools, and josh stein became north carolina's first jewish governor. and then we have *waves* everything else. a bunch of states voted to explicitly prohibit non citizen voting (which is already illegal) and the attempt to overturn florida's six week abortion ban failed and ted cruz won in texas and i am so disappointed. (there was a brief period when he was behind! and i was really hoping colin allred would pull it out and the voters would show cruz the door. but no.) and florida voted against legalizing pot. black and hispanic guys voted for mango mussolini which i do not understand - have they not heard a word he said in the past, oh, eight years? seriously, guys, you're asking for leopards to eat your face.

i paid attention to exactly zero news last night so i only knew about stein and that vermont called it for harris at seven-thirty - polls only closed at seven - until i woke up this morning and my roommate told me about the white house and congress. when folks at work asked how i was - like the standard hi, good morning, how are you - i was like well, that's kind of a loaded question. i took a long walk with admin a who sits down the corridor from me (she had to drop off a return at amazon) and we vented about the election for a bit until she said she couldn't talk about it any more and i went ok! and we changed the subject. right after we got back admin a who just got married (there are three admins a, ok?) solicited folks to come on a sanity walk with her, but my feet hurt and it was so hot out - it was like 78º and was 75º yesterday and seriously, what the hell kinda world is this - i didn't go so it was just her and admin p and a lot of swearing.

man, i feel like i need to apologize to all the non americans in the audience. i'm sorry over half my fellow voters are completely ok putting a dumbshit racist conman in charge. i have a feeling the next four years are going to be a bumpy international ride.

i can't get over it. i'm not kidding - what the hell is wrong with us? the best we can hope for is for dems to take the house but i don't know what the chances are.

anyway. the only way out is through. *girds loins*

last month kids at an elementary tribal school held elections to vote for school lunch and learn about the democratic process. pizza won.

last weekend - friday and saturday - i had to go to new hampshire with one of my groups for a retreat. the bigger group they're part of goes away every year, usually to cape cod, but this year the pi's wanted to go somewhere different. all the programming (students presenting their work, basically) was on friday and the social stuff was saturday. the social stuff was supposed to include mini golf but it was CLOSED. altho to be fair we went to a beach town in november and nothing was open because it was pretty emphatically the off-season. we ended up going back to the hotel and watching who framed roger rabbit off someone's laptop because we had karaoke on friday and all the equipment was still set up. karaoke was fun, by the way, mostly because everyone was very enthusiasic even when they didn't know the words and, uh, couldn't really sing. the indian students did a song in hindi? i think? and english, and an assortment of chinese students did two songs in mandarin (possibly) and my pi sang like a prayer all by his lonesome and it was deeply weird. and as a bonus it only took an hour to get there and an hour to get back. the hotel was kind of old and kind of shabby but everyone who works there was super nice and accommodating. and the beach was right across the street. we took group pictures on the beach on friday and after the photos were taken and everyone was just standing around i walked down to the water - the tide was out so it was just sand and sand and more sand - and stood in it and even tho i knew it would be cold, i mean it's new hampshire in november, it's the atlantic, of course it's cold - it was still kind of a surprise.

and then sunday because i didn't have curling i went to ikea with tamalinn and friend a. meatballs first, shopping second. it was crowded but not ridiculously so. the weather was gorgeous but why do people go shopping in gorgeous weather? be outside while you can!

the field museum in chicago put a mummy throught a ct scanner to see how she was sealed inside her cartonnage, aka the inner coffin. it didn't have any seams and archaeologists aren't going to cut it open but they wanted to know how it was built and how the mummy fit inside it. and now they know! it's very cool.

wtf, fun with friends, ikea, archaeological nifty, nerd support
