mostly book meme

What I just finished reading:
nemesis, which i mostly liked. one of the things i like about the series is that even tho it's set in ancient rome people live very recognizable lives. not just in the sense that everyone everywhere at pretty much every point in history has had at least one family squabble, and you can like one sibling but lose patience with another, and spouses get cranky with each other, and kids do dumb shit, and friends have your back, and at some point you're going to have to work with someone you don't like who doesn't like you. i mean, there's that, but also, like, falco has to go out of town to investigate a murder and check out his late dad's seaside villa, and he gets something for his wife on his way home. he has a dog. he has clandestine meetings in bars and cafes. he talks about having to put on a nice toga for a dinner party thrown by someone he doesn't like who doesn't like him. (and then he complains about some of the food.) it's very contemporary in a lot of ways. and then, you know, there's the emperor and the ins and outs of roman slavery and stuff that's more historical. and the fact that this is book 20 and i haven't read books 4-19 wasn't a problem.

i dunno. it was fine. i wanted to know whodunnit so i kept reading - it's certainly an easy read, and falco and his friends and some of his fam are likable characters, but pretty much everyone else is some degree of greedy, grasping, and "what's in it for me". which gets kind of tiresome. but overall, not a bad read.

What I am reading now:
the fairy bargains of prospect hill, by rowenna miller, which i'm not that far into but am enjoying so far. i wish i knew what the characters looked like - is this a thing in fiction now? not really describing anyone's appearance except vaguely in passing? is this a case of authors going "eh, it doesn't matter what they look like, whatever the reader pictures is fine" - and it's very slowly settling into a time period and i have a feeling it might be kind of a slow book. which is totally ok. like i said, so far so good.

What I'm going to read next:
i have a graphic novel i helped kickstart - don't forget to breathe - so maybe that. otherwise, who knows.

this morning i forgot to put on earrings and felt half naked the whole day. oy. there were unsurprisingly very few people at work. i took a long walk with admin a in the heat and the sunshine and apparently a bunch of my fellow admins were really busy! but i was not. i got to sit in a/c and read one of the submissions for writing group and honestly, i was ok with that.

was there something else i wanted to share? i do not remember. talk amongst yourselves. :D
