happy fourth of july to my fellow americans! if you like fireworks i hope you got fireworks, and if you don't i hope you could avoid them. and to the non-americans i hope you all had a lovely tuesday. :D (it felt like sunday to me but that's because i had yesterday off too.)
the weather was supposed to be crappy today - and it was crappy! rainy and gross! boston canceled the fireworks. and then it cleared enough for boston to uncancel them - so yesterday my sister and i went to town fireworks at a town about a half hour away. we went there last year so we knew what to expect. i love local fireworks - this one was in the parking lot of the high school with everyone sitting down a hill on the football field. (i think it was the football field. regular and artificial grass, anyway.) they had a band and food tents (we brought our own) and most importantly BATHROOMS and the people watching was fantastic (so many small children! and a couple of women sitting on a blanket behind us were knitting) and the weather was perfect and the fireworks were just great. i do love a good fireworks show.
on saturday we saw asteroid city which i think i liked? it has a framing device in which the movie of asteroid city is actually a play, and the framing scenes (which are in black and white) are about the playwright, the actors, the director, and the production of the play. the movie has like interstitial bits with "act x, scene y-z". neither my sister nor i could figure out what was the point of that. was it just to emphasize the artificiality of the movie on the screen? if anyone's seen it, what do you think? i haven't read any reviews or anything so i don't know what critics and other moviegoers are saying. it had a lot of great actors, at least, and everyone was totally worth watching. i also really liked the kind of washed out look everything had. and it's weird in a way i really enjoy.
we got previews for barbie and oppenheimer plus something called drive-away dolls with margaret qualley and geraldine viswanathan (from miracle workers which comes back on monday!) which looks fun.
and then we went out for bbq and went "what was the point of that? what was wes anderson trying to say?" at each other.
sunday i had family zoom and went to the grocery store and otherwise did nothing, and today i briefly left the house just to get out of the house because i otherwise... did nothing. oh, there were a lot of star wars movies in there too. that's what long weekends are for. :D if it hadn't been rainy and gross i would've taken a walk or something.
i started watching secret invasion while i wait for the next episode of the lazarus project and i have to say, it's both weird and fascinating to see an older nick fury who's lost some of his edge. also, olivia colman who is awful and fabulous.
