first, i hope the americans on the flist got the day off and enjoyed it. the weather here was lovely if a tch cold (it was windy) (occasionally even HECKIN WIMDY as they say) and i took a walk into the closer square, couldn't find a seat in my favorite coffee place, sat outside with my monkey bread and iced vietnamese coffee, went home to pee, went back out to harvard square, bought a book (the fairy bargains of prospect hill which makes me wonder what would happen if one of my little old lady lesbians ends up under the hill and the other one has to rescue her), came home. sat on the front porch. i ran into the upstairs neighbor on the way home and had a nice chat. i like the upstairs neighbor. i have now also petted the landlady's daughter's little yippy dogs and put in a load of laundry so i can say today was not only productive in a relaxing way but also in a getting-shit-done way.
second, speaking of the little old lady lesbians, altho they'd argue they're not that old, thank you for all the names! they're now joanna (the taller one) and miriam (the practical one), and all the extra names might end up being middle names. or miriam's granddaughter's name. and now i want one of them to be kidnapped by the fae and the other has to go rescue her except why would the fair folk kidnap a sixty-five-year-old lesbian? y'know?
i worked from home on thursday which made it feel like friday and then i ALSO worked from home on friday and did exactly nothing which was to be expected. saturday my sister and i got pedicures in advance of our trip which is possibly a tradition now and went down to the outdoor outlet mall which was SWARMING with people because it was a long weekend and i completely forgot that if you don't go somewhere for memorial day you go shopping. we were very productive tho and it was a fabulous day to be outside. then we went back to her house and looked up the weather for tuscany and learned it's going to be rainy or potentially rainy the whole week we're there. >:| altho it's a week from now and the weather can change.
yesterday my cousin j (not j with the twins) had a graduation party for his kid who just graduated from college, go her. i knew like four people there, all cousins, but it was fun and the food was good (egg salad sandwiches! meatballs! lasagna! CAKE) and the weather was still fabulous, if hot. it was an afternoon party so my sister and i went off to see fast x afterwards and first of all, why do we need TEN fast and furious movies? actually twelve because apparently fast x is part 1 of a three-part finale. which. WHY. i never saw #9 and have only seen parts of #8 but the precipitating event of #10 hinges on retconning #5 (which i did see) so i could mostly keep up. it was, uh, well, if you've seen any of the f&f movies you have a good idea what it's like - fantastic car chases, entirely unrealistic stunts, bugnuts plot, some funny lines, some nice scenery, vin diesel being very serious about his ~family~.
tyrese gibson was about 80% dumbass comic relief, or maybe just 80% dumbass, and while jason momoa started out pure psycho he kind of devolved into what seemed to me to be queer-coded flamboyant villain. which is... not my thing. he looked like he was having fun but i didn't care about the character or his motivation at all. i just wanted him to shut up and get out of the way. we got helen mirren, jason statham, john cena, rita moreno (!), and charlize theron (who got to beat up and get beaten up by michelle rodriguez, and one of the things i appreciate about these movies is that the women are brutal fighters), and i really liked brie larson and her spiky shoes, but the fact that paul walker is dead but his character isn't, but they never explain why he's not around, is baffling. like, they mention brian but never why he's not there, and dom's kid is little b which i assume stands for little brian but no one ever calls him that. the lack of big brian is weirdly obvious, unless it's a me thing and this was explained in an earlier movie. a lot of the dialogue is dumb but that's not why we're here - we're here for the car chases and the (infrequent) car races and because vin diesel is only really good at a couple of things and this is one of them.
when jason statham appeared someone in the audience went "!!!" loud enough to make some people (including me :D ) giggle, and when you see cipher's sub rise out of the ice and gisele stick her head out of the hatch i said "what??" loud enough to annoy my sister, who is not generally annoyed by me talking in movies. but seriously, WHAT? was gisele or was she not sucked into a jet engine at the end of #6? altho i saw the part where han dies (i think he blows up?) and he's clearly not actually dead, so who knows. i don't want to wait for the next installment to find out how (and WHY) that happened.
did i like it? eh, not as much as previous movies. i feel like i need to watch the end of #6, all of #8, and then #9. and then i'll fully understand what's going on. maybe.
we got a bunch of horror movie previews, plus the next mission impossible (which is part 1 and what's with the multi-part finales?), asteroid city (gimme), oppenheimer (gimme that too), and gran turismo (which just looks like a two-hour ad for a video game). anyway f&f 10 wasn't a bad way to kill two and a half hours, and if you've seen #1-9 and you like them, i'd say go.
