i have now earwormed myself with a song i don't know all the lyrics to

a thing i forgot to mention about air, which is the thing i always think of when people mention michael jordan, which is a scene from the movie blink. which if you haven't seen it, stars madeleine stowe as a blind woman (her mom smashed her face into a mirror when she was little) who gets a cornea transplant or something so she can see again. the corneas (or whatever part of the eye she gets) came from a murder victim, and madeleine starts hallucinating things the eye donor saw before she was killed, including the guy who did it. (this is apparently a real thing and not just thriller fiction.) she's seeing things that aren't there, she can't see fabulously well when things are there, her eyes hurt, she's having a time. she's a fiddler in an irish folk band (played by the drovers) and says to the manager (played by laurie metcalf) "i don't know what beauty is, everything i see is ugly, show me something beautiful". and because the movie came out in 1993 and because it's set in chicago, laurie takes her to a bulls game. and they're sitting in the nosebleed seats and madeleine can't see the court anyway and laurie is just beside herself going "he's so beautiful, isn't he beautiful?" about michael jordan. and that's what i always think of when people talk about him.

yesterday was open studios day 2 - also gorgeous weather - and i got a late start but i actually got stuff. a painting of a fried egg (the painter also had some little portraits of tardigrades which my roommate referred to as tardigrade pinups) and a square photo of a building in new york and a stack of 3d-printed capybaras complete with 3d-printed yuzu and some cards (including a perfect birthday card for my sister) and a pair of coasters and a super cute cutting board. and i admired beautiful furniture and had a fun conversation with a woman who makes among other things rings set with porcelain teeth. very cool and very disturbing. the furniture maker was happy to explain how she does the marquetry in her pieces and this is honestly one of my favoritest things about open studios - getting to hear how people make the things they do. i love learning about the process. (the other things i love about open studios are getting to see inside people's studios, getting to see inside their houses if they work from home, and, you know, getting to see a lot of neat art i wouldn't otherwise be exposed to. and sometimes i go home with a painting of a fried egg.)

and then i came home and was exhausted and had cereal for dinner. ahem. and today i took a nap during my lunch break and i clearly need to be going to bed earlier. this getting-old-and-needing-sleep thing sucks.
