happy national siblings day, my fellow americans! seems like kind of a weird thing to set aside a specific day to celebrate, but hey, if you have sibling(s) you get along with, call them and say hi.
i had to go in to work today to put up posters for a talk tomorrow (couldn't do it before i went to atlanta) and it's weird to be there on monday. unsurprisingly there were A LOT of emails to deal with. i got a lot done, tho.
yesterday i went over to my sister's (as if i hadn't spent every day with her since wednesday...) and we made dinner (tuna casserole and carrot pudding, and i brought mushroom farfel) and watched exodus: gods and kings because it's moses-movie season and she likes christian bale better than charlton heston. i imprinted really hard on the ten commandments as a wee thing so every movie about the exodus kind of pales in comparison, but at least gods and kings looks slightly less, uh, idiosyncratic. and the effects are better. altho i think the horses have stirrups even tho they hadn't been invented yet, or at least they hadn't been invented in egypt.
finally watched the last episode of poker face and it did not go where i was expecting. not that i know what i was expecting, just not that. but i liked it. it's set up nicely for a second season, if it gets one.
there are maple trees, one, two, three
but wait there’s 5 more, 2 behind the bungalow
and lots in the poetry state forest
I hear target practice from far away, it’s
probably for shooting deer, bears and dinosaurs
but how will we, still alive, socialize
in the winter? wrapped in bear skins
we’ll sit around pot-bellied stoves eating
the lobelias of fear leftover from desperation
last summer’s woodland sunflowers and bee balm
remind us of black cherry eaten in a hurry
while the yard grows in the moonlight
shrinking like a salary or a damaged item
when we return in the morning for a breakfast
of harvest petunias sprinkled with wild marsh mallow
