went to florida! now i have to catch up

Jan 30, 2023 01:08

so i went to florida last week and got a little sun and ate a lot and did not sleep well (i think partly because it was a single bed and i'm used to a double) and played dominos and watched a lot of yellowstone (my mom and sister are big fans and my sister had to catch up to mom so i got to catch up too) (i still haven't seen s1 tho) and saw a play called the silent sky about astronomer henrietta leavitt which was fantastic and saw aladdin the musical which was likewise fantastic (not sold on the actress who played jasmine but the genie had an amazing voice and the set and choreography were just fabulous) and watched the fabelmans on streaming (couldn't quite buy michelle williams as a nice jewish girl but overall enjoyed it) and went on a sunset cruise around the bay and did not get to walk on the beach where the sand is like flour but we didn't really have time and the one day we probably did have time the weather wasn't fab. also i got a pedicure because why not. good times were had and now i have to go back to work tomorrow and have the rest of my performance evaluation. >.< and probably start trying to schedule meetings for the spring semester. >.< and submit expenses.

anyway. fun was had, fish tacos were et. also fried shrimp and hushpuppies, because florida. my sister is still there - she's staying until march but she can work from home - but i wanted to come back. i find it weird to work from someone else's home plus at some point i'll have to physically be on campus.

curling tonight was at 8:30 (haaaaate) and i forgot to put on my kneepads so not only were my knees cold but i was completely discombobulated for most of the game. apparently i still managed some good shots, go me. (i wear kneepads because when i started playing i'd get off the ice and look like i'd been punched in both knees. and if you fall a lot, which sometimes i do, it's nice to have some padding on the body parts that hit the ice first.)

i missed some challenges but am only going to do two.

challenge #13 - recs!

art:

jensen, go solid (j2) by amberdreams. painted for a bigbang and i share because her jensen is just so pretty.

dean winchester meets stede bonnet (spn, our flag means death), also by amberdreams. an illustrated story about... dean and stede meeting. (it's not a pirate au.) i apparently did not comment on this for which i am a bit embarrassed.

art for kneeling by the roadside (j2) by romachebella. this might be cheating because it's the art for my bigbang, but it's so good and so perfect for the fic that i must pimp.

fic:

(i said this last year and nothing's changed - a lot of my fannish activity happens on tumblr so that's where these fics came from.)

paperwork, by copperbadge (mcu, assorted avengers)

“We never had to do paperwork in the war, you know.”

Cap’s grumbling, while perhaps justified, was also hilarious; maybe it was just that they’d all been in the conference room for hours, filling out belated after-actions because Hill had finally Had Enough, but something about Steve grumbling that things had been easier In His Day struck Clint as hilarious.

college radio au, by nicolodigenovas (the old guard, joe/nicky)

We have a radio program together in college and it’s the best and worst idea we’ve ever had, and now I can’t focus in class because I keep thinking of what we could do next Tuesday. We have a time slot that’s fucking ridiculous, 2 to 4 am, but apparently there are a lot of people who are glad to have problem sleeping because they like when I talk about art and you try to interrupt me, before we fought and it was awful but now it’s just banter and fuck, I love your laugh, Nicky.

(one of my tags for this is "i love a good pine".)

the gang stranded somewhere with a bunch of kids, by toli-a (the old guard)

Bastien holds the screaming infant at arm’s length, in the same fashion he started out holding the axes and broadswords and scimitars they threw his way. It’s been half a century since Sebastien’s cradled a child this small in his arms. He’s 78 years old. He should be dandling his great-grandchildren on his knees. He should have clapped his grandsons on their shoulders as they welcomed their children into the world. He should be ancient. He should be -

(it's 1850 and it sucks to be booker altho to be fair it always sucks to be booker.)

vids:

it's a hard knock life, by bluef00t (spider-man, specifically the tobey maguire version). thirty-three seconds of peter getting knocked around. i laughed and then i felt bad.

i'm so used to tears for fears that lorde's cover of this song sounds deeply weird to me, but it's a great version for the vid and the editing is just so good.

challenge #15 - the future of fandom!

fandom is older than we are and it's not going anywhere, for the simple reason that there will always be people who love a thing and want to share that love with other people.

american fanzines started with scifi and fantasy fans in the 1930s. they looked a little different from the zines our fannish foremothers produced for star trek, and while i wasn't there i'd hazard a guess og trek fandom looked a little different from fandom now. so the formats will change, and the platforms will change - something will follow twitter and tumblr and discord and lj and dw - and maybe the things fans talk about will change, or the way they talk about those things will change, but one thing won't and that's the desire of human beings to get together with other human beings and bitch about the things they love.

i mean, look. people like to complain but people also like to share, and we do things in groups because that's how we survive. there will always be something new for someone to love - new performances, new music, new art, new words - and there will always be someone else to say "oh, you like this thing? what a coincidence, so do i! let us squee."

and yes, there will always be a third person to come along and complain the first two aren't liking their thing in the right way, or for the right reasons, but one of the benefits of being a human being with free will is that you can tell that third person to fuck off. :D honestly, one of the first rules of fandom should be "thou shalt not harsh another fan's squee". don't yuck someone else's yum, y'know? and if fandom continues on its current trajectory of more and more platforms on which to be a fan, if you find a fannish place that turns out not to work for you, you can (theoretically) find someplace else that works better.

i have no idea what fandom will look like in twenty years or how fans will talk to each other or how many spaces there will be for them to do so. i don't think anyone does. but think back to what it was like when you found your first fandom, and know that someone in the future will feel the same when they find theirs. it might not look the same but at heart it will be the same, because fandom is made up of people and people want to share what they love.

our flag means death, spider-man, vids, fanfic, the old guard, mcu, snowflake challenge, florida, fandom, fanart, curling, kneeling by the roadside, supernatural
