today at work i met an admin's cat. the other admin and i were both going for the elevator from opposite directions so she was holding her cat who was wearing a harness and leash (i guess in case he got loose?) and looked totally ok with being carried. he was long silky hair and very tall ears and was very chill. usually when people bring their pets to work it's dogs, and while i do love an office dog it was kind of nice to see an office cat.
yesterday was CORN FEST which one of the groups on my floor hosts every year. this year was corn fest 34. they invite everyone on the 5th and 6th floors (i'm on 5) and as the name implies serve a lot of corn. there's a little balcony off the 5th floor lounge so one of the admins put a table out there with two hot plates and two very large pots for the cooking of said corn. there was also fruit salad, cheese and crackers, mezze plates (grape leaves, omg), antipasto plates (tiny balls of mozzarella, omg), turkey, and SHRIMP. also a giant cake with a frosting ear of corn on top (whoever decorated that cake did an amazing job with the corn kernels) and an ice cream castle, which another admin made by packing ice cream into a silicone mold and adding chocolate covered ice cream cone towers with tiny paper flags sticking out the pointy ends. i did not eat an inadvisable number of shrimp altho i kind of wanted to, and the corn was yummy. also, the cake was DELISH altho seriously, there was so much of it. i took some home.
(one of my pi's wandered through as we were setting up and expressed sadness that he was going to miss it - he had a class - so i wrapped a couple of corns in tinfoil for him and left them in his office for when he got back.)
the goal of corn fest is apparently to get all the students in this one group to hang out and socialize, and to get all the faculty to discuss their work, and to socialize with other folks on the floors, and of course to encourage everyone to stuff their faces. :D there were A LOT of people which was really nice to see, because even tho classes started last week the building or at least my floor is still pretty empty a lot of the time.
monday and tuesday one of my pi's hosted the local pod of a symposium, for which she expected a lot more people than actually showed up. i ordered coffee for noon and coffee and cookies for 3p for both days and let me just share that there were A LOT of cookies leftover (they did eventually get eaten) and i had to dump out A LOT of coffee. we totally miscalculated how many people would come.
all week i've felt super busy except at the end of the day i have no idea what i've actually done. i even keep notes during the day of what i do. i also had a headache for three days so maybe that's related.
you know patagonia, the outdoor-wear company?
the founder turned over his share of the co to a trust and a non-profit, which will use the company's profits to fight climate change. it's still a for-profit company, it's just that the founder and his fam don't profit from it any more.
