it's wednesday, isn't it?
What I just finished reading:
lies sleeping, which i thoroughly enjoyed even if the plot seemed to get away from me (and possibly the author?) once or twice. i consistently love how ben aaronovitch writes about london and its history and mythology, and the occasional nerdy reference makes me giggle. like, peter has to give a toast at a gathering and calls for life, liberty, and peace, and sits down before he can include a hard-boiled egg. (he doesn't mention the reasonably-priced love.) it's got the requisite magic and vast supporting cast and rivers and myths and everything happening at the end. and guleed, who's the best. the rivers books are kind of all the same in a way, but it's a way that works, and if they deviated from it they wouldn't be as good.
What I am reading now:
the galaxy, and the ground within by becky chambers, which because it's her has very little in the way of plot progression and is mostly worldbuilding and people wandering around talking to each other. this one is 100% aliens with no human characters - at least none on screen - which is neither good nor bad but mostly makes for some interesting worldbuilding. at one point one of the characters is worried about her neighbors, who she can't contact and can't just go see, and another character watches her take a giant bite out of an iced bun for "therapeutic purposes". which i thought was a cute way to phrase it. (there are a lot of snacks in this book. it doesn't make me hungry so much as it makes me wish all those snacks were real. altho i can probably pass on the fire shrimp because i imagine they're very hot&spicy.) i'm about a third of the way through and liking it so far, even tho nothing is really happening.
What I'm going to read next:
maybe false value. otherwise i don't know.
if you happen to have a spare £50k lying around,
there's a sea fort for sale off the coast of england. hull, to be exact. it was built for sea defense during ww1 and needs a bit of upgrading but it was designed to hold 200 men so you could throw one hell of a party.
and now if you'll excuse me i have an episode of stranger things to go "agh that's disgusting" at before bed.
